The article "SOBA Discusses Year's Events" published by The Collegian October 17th, 1974, details a club meeting for Student Organization for Black Awareness (SOBA). In the meeting they discussed a need for funding their Black History Week which was scheduled for February 9th to 16th, 1974. The article names the former officers of the club, Reggie Mitchell, Chairman, the Vice-Chairman, James Comes, the Secretary, Wanda Stark, and lastly the Treasurer, Burgess Simmons. Mitchell said, "The primary aim of the S.O.B.A. is to help blacks retain their identity at school and in the city of Richmond by promoting black culture and history, thus increasing an awareness of themselves."
