Description An account of the resource In this hour long oral history, alumnus Darnell “DJ” Morris (B’75) sat down and shared his story with Jenifer Yi (’22) and Johnnette Johnson (’20) at the University of Richmond’s Boatwright Memorial Library on June 28th, 2019. Darnell “DJ” Morris was one of the first black students to be admitted into the University’s School of Business. Morris recalls his educational journey starting with the integration of schools in the 70s, beginning college at Ferrum College, to his campus involvement and success in the Robins School of Business after transferring to the University of Richmond at the beginning of his junior year. Morris gives insight into how he handled difficulties with both students and professors and describes the reputation that the Robins School of Business had amongst students in the 70s. <img src="https://memory.richmond.edu/files/misc/MorrisDJ_1974-01.JPG" alt="" /><img src="https://memory.richmond.edu/files/misc/MorrisDJ_1975-03.jpg" alt="" /> Darnell J. Morris (DJ) was born and raised in Esmont, Virginia (rural area of Southern Albemarle County). He earned an Associate of Arts, Business Administration from Ferrum College (1973) a Bachelor of Science, Business Administration (Accounting - 1975) and Master of Business Administration (1987) from the University of Richmond.  He earned the designation of Certified Public Accountant in 1979. <img src="https://memory.richmond.edu/files/misc/MorrisDJ_1975-01.PNG" alt="" width="700px" /> He is the second (oldest son) of eleven children. His parents and grandparents taught him to follow the teachings of the Bible (KJV) and live the Christian Life. DJ is retired with over forty (40) years of financial/accounting/auditing experience. His career included over four years with a Big 4 firm and nearly 25 years of financial management positions with a major communications company. Description An account of the resource In this hour long oral history, alumna Robin Mundle (W’85) sat down and shared her story with Jenifer Yi (’22) at the University of Richmond’s Boatwright Memorial Library on June 13th, 2019. As both a University of Richmond graduate and current Administrative Coordinator for Rhetoric and Communication Studies, Mundle has had a unique perspective as a current and former member of campus. Reminiscing her days as a commuter student, Mundle contrasts the homogeneous student body of the 80s to the more diverse campus composition of today. Mundle reflects on her educational and social life growing up a Richmond native leading to her admission to the University of Richmond. Robin Mundle graduated from University of Richmond's Westhampton College in 1985, majoring in Political Science. A native to Richmond, she graduated from Douglas Freeman High School in Henrico VA in 1981. She is currently the Administrative Coordinator for Rhetoric and Communication Studies Department and the Writing Center at the University of Richmond. Description An account of the resource In this oral history interview, retired professor of accounting Raymond Slaughter (‘77-‘18) sat down with Cole Richard (’21) and Jenifer Yi (’22) on June 10, 2019, in Boatwright Memorial Library. Over the course of the one hour interview, Slaughter discussed his experience as the first black professor in the business school and one of the few black professors university-wide, including his educational background at Historically Black Colleges and Universities prior to coming to Richmond, the hiring and tenure processes, and his service-focused academic career. Slaughter also reflected on institutional changes he would like to see in order to reduce discrimination and promote diversity in faculty. <img src="https://memory.richmond.edu/files/misc/SlaughterRaymond_1980.jpg" alt="" /> Raymond Slaughter was born in 1945 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He graduated from Kentucky State University in 1967, and attended Howard University Law School and obtained his law degree in 1970. In 1971, he received his MBA in Business Administration from the University of Pennsylvania. He worked for public accounting firm Ernst & Ernst in Detroit Michigan, and then began teaching at Bucknell University. In 1977, he moved to Richmond and began teaching in the accounting department of the Robins School of Business, where he taught for 41 years before his retirement in 2018. Description An account of the resource In this oral history interview, Dominic Finney (R ‘99) sat down with Shira Greer (‘22) and Jenifer Yi (‘22) on June 12, 2019, in Boatwright Memorial Library. Over the course of the one hour and fifteen minute interview, Finney shared his experiences as both a black and gay student on campus in the late 1990s. Though he greatly enjoyed his time at the university, especially with the theatre and dance departments, Finney also discussed the initial culture shock he felt coming to campus and the culture of complacency he found here at UR. <img src="https://memory.richmond.edu/files/misc/FinneyDominic_1996-01.JPG" alt="" /><img src="https://memory.richmond.edu/files/misc/FinneyDominic_1997-01.JPG" alt="" /><img src="https://memory.richmond.edu/files/misc/FinneyDominic_1998-01.JPG" alt="" /><img src="https://memory.richmond.edu/files/misc/FinneyDominic_1999-04.JPG" alt="" /> Dominic Finney grew up in Martinsville, VA and graduated from Laural Park High School in 1995. He decided to come to the University of Richmond after attending Governor's School for Humanities (specifically writing) there the summer before his senior year of high school. During his time at the University of Richmond, Dominic was a dancer and choreographer with the University Dancers, wrote for The Messenger, and participated in theatrical productions on campus. <img src="https://memory.richmond.edu/files/misc/FinneyDominic_1999-01.JPG" alt="" /> Dominic received a Bachelor of Arts in English and Theatre Arts in 1999, and a Master of Arts in English in 2004, both degrees from UR. After leaving the University, he worked in corporate merchandising and sales for TimeLife, Inc., Circuit City, Inc., OfficeMax, Inc., and Belkin.
