Description An account of the resource In this oral history interview, Iria Jones (W’87) sat down with Eden Wolfer (’20) and Rena Xiao (’20) on July 2, 2018, in Boatwright Memorial Library. Over the course of the one hour interview, Jones discussed her experience as one of few black students on campus in the mid-1980s, from her experiences with white students, to the relationship and community building black students had to do at the time. Jones reflects on the social atmosphere at the university, recalls faculty members who she gravitated towards during her time as a student, and shares her lived experience on campus in contrast to the image of diversity the university presented to prospective students at the time. <img src="https://memory.richmond.edu/files/misc/jones1984-01.JPG" alt="" /><img src="https://memory.richmond.edu/files/misc/jones1985-01.JPG" alt="" /><img src="https://memory.richmond.edu/files/misc/jones1986-01.JPG" alt="" /><img src="https://memory.richmond.edu/files/misc/jones1987-01.JPG" alt="" /> Iria Jones is from Richmond, Virginia.  She grew up in Southside of Richmond in the Oak Grove neighborhood that is adjacent to “Old Manchester.” She attended Armstrong-Kennedy High School where she graduated from in 1983. (In 1979, Armstrong High School and John F. Kennedy High School were combined to form the Armstrong-Kennedy High School complex. The Richmond city high school complexes were eliminated after the 1985-86 school year).  She graduated from the University of Richmond in 1987 with a B.A. in Sociology and Criminal Justice and began working at the University of Richmond in the Boatwright Memorial Library where she is currently the Operations Manager. Description An account of the resource In this oral history interview conducted via telephone with recording assistance from Eden Wolfer ('20) and Clemson University, Dr. Jesse N. Moore (B'81) spoke with Rena Xiao ('20) on June 26, 2018, in Boatwright Memorial Library. Over the course of the one hour and twenty minute interview, Moore shares about his recruitment to the University of Richmond via the football team and his relationships with fellow athletes on campus; his experience attending a predominantly white institution after growing up in a predominantly Black neighborhood in Newport News, VA and attending an integrated high school; visting other universities to build a social circle; applying and being accepted as one of the few Black students at the Robins School of Business; experiences of isolation in the business school; positive and negative interactions with faculty; participating in the ROTC program; how his experience as a Black student at the University of Richmond contributed to his experiences in graduate school and as a current faculty member at Clemson University; bringing a Black fraternity--Phi Beta Sigma--to campus for the first time; shares what has kept him from returning to the University of Richmond as an alumus; and gives advice for current Black students. <img src="https://memory.richmond.edu/files/misc/moorejesse1981-01.JPG" alt="" /> Jesse N. Moore is originally from Newport News, Va. He graduated from Homer L. Ferguson High School in 1977 as an Honors student and decorated Track and Field and Football athlete. <img src="https://memory.richmond.edu/files/misc/moorejesse1979-01.JPG" alt="" /> Moore (first on the left in the second row) with the University of Richmond football team, 1979. Jesse was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in the United States Army Reserve and earned a B.S. degree in Business Administration with an emphasis in Management from the E. Claiborne Robins School of Business at the University of Richmond in 1981. He was a member of the Spider football team starting 43 consecutive games as an offensive lineman earning All-South Independent First Team and Associated Press All-American Football Team Honorable Mention honors for his senior year season. After serving active duty military tours, abroad and domestically, and working in several middle management level positions in the corporate arena, Jesse returned to school. He earned a MBA degree with emphasis in Management from Northern Arizona University and a Ph.D. in Business Administration with emphasis in Marketing from the University of South Florida. At the time of the interview for the Race & Racism at UR Project, Jesse is an Associate Professor and Chair of the Department of Marketing in the College of Business at Clemson University. Jesse’s scholarly research publications have earned many awards and appear in some of the top Marketing related academic journals and conference proceedings. He has been a member of several Marketing and Sales associations including the American Marketing Association (AMA) and National Conference in Sales Management (NCSM), served on Editorial Review Boards, and taught a variety of Marketing classes in the USA and abroad. Jesse’s children are twins, Jay Moore and Stacey Moore Outlaw. His grandchildren are Sydney Moore, Ivey Moore, Jahara Outlaw, and twins, Johnathan Moore and Jaylin Moore. Description An account of the resource In this oral history interview, Rayford L. Harris, Jr. (R’77) sat down with Rena Xiao (’20) and Eden Wolfer (’20) on July 1, 2018, in Boatwright Memorial Library. Over the course of the one hour and forty minute interview, Harris shares about how he ended up at the University of Richmond via his orthodontist William Tyler Haynes; his first experiences on campus; being one of 12 Black students in his incoming class; interactions with fraternities, the baseball team, and intramural sports; the experience of forming social circles as a commuter student; the organization of the first Black student organization SOBA; the first attempt to bring a Black fraternity (Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc.) to campus; some of the first Black History Weeks at the university; dating and friendships with white women on campus; switching from pre-med to a math major; interactions with other students of color on campus; attending the university during the Vietnam War and the sexual revolution; relationships with staff members; dealing with stereotypes about Black students on campus; his contributions to the university as an alum; reflects on the changes at the university since his time on campus; friendships and interactions with Black women on campus; gives advice to current students of color; his career in the City of Richmond government; and finally shares a story about his father, Rayford L. Harris, Sr., a lifelong friend of civil rights attorney Oliver Hill. <img src="https://memory.richmond.edu/files/misc/HarrisRayford_1975-01.JPG" alt="" /><<img src="https://memory.richmond.edu/files/misc/HarrisRayford_1977-01.JPG" alt="" /> Rayford L. Harris, Jr. is a native of Richmond and a proud product of Richmond Public Schools.  He graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School and matriculated at the University of Richmond, Richmond College in the fall of 1973.  After visiting the campus at the insistence of Dr. William Tyler Haynes, his orthodontist, Rayford selected Richmond over Hampton University, Virginia Tech, and the University of Virginia, among others. Starting as a Pre-Med student, he eventually followed his true calling and majored in Mathematics.  During his time at UR, he was on the baseball team and coached by Chuck Boone.  Other activities included intramural basketball and being a member of SOBA – the Student Organization for Black Awareness.  He graduated in 1977 with a Bachelor of Arts.  <img src="https://memory.richmond.edu/files/misc/HarrisRayford_1974-01.JPG" alt="" /> After graduating, there was a brief four-year teaching career with Richmond Public Schools where Rayford taught Mathematics at Henderson Middle School, John Marshall and Maggie Walker High Schools, and the Marshall-Walker (combined) High School.  During that time he also coached Girls’ Basketball, Softball, and Baseball. In 1981, Rayford began a 33-year career with the City of Richmond.  He began as a Programmer Trainee and advanced to Lead Programmer.  He ended the Information Technology part of his tenure as a Lead Systems Developer having been involved with most of the City’s automated systems.  The other half of his City Career was with the Department of Budget and Strategic Planning where he began as a Senior Budget & Management Analyst.  Over the years, he was promoted to Deputy Director and ultimately appointed by Mayor L. Douglas Wilder as the Director of Budget and Strategic Planning.  After serving under a second Mayor, Dwight C. Jones, Rayford retired from the City in December of 2013. After retirement, Rayford served as the CFO for a small Non Profit Agency, Quin Rivers Inc. – A Community Action Agency and “re-retired” June 30, 2019. Other activities include being a CIGNA Mentor, a Spider Club Member, serving on the Boards of the North Richmond YMCA, the RVA Financial Federal Credit Union, the Richmond First Club, and multiple Foundations of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity. Rayford also has a niece who graduated as a Spider in 2017.  They both look forward to sharing the same reunion years that end in 2 and 7.
