She talks how her expectations of leaving home were different from how she felt once she got to Richmond and how she misses the comforts of home. She vividly describes the day she left home to go to Richmond and how her, "old colored mammy [was] standing on the steps, crying at the thought of her "baby chile's" going away". Mary's "mammy" resembles the stereotypical “mammy” figure associated with popular depictions of black women during this period. In addition, it is clear that the relationship between Mary and her African American caretaker is very strong because she said her "mammy" was crying at the sight of her leaving home.
