Stanley Davis, former chairman of SOBA said, “We got tired of waiting around to be incorporated into the University so we are incorporating ourselves.” SOBA, in an attempt to become more involved in the campus, organized a Black History Week under the theme “Shades of Unseen Beauty.” The week of February third was a seven day celebration of black culture including a gospel night, guest speaker Senora B. Lawson former vice-president of Virginia’s National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) chapter, and more. At the time, SOBA had 23 members, which according to the article represented two thirds of the black student body.
