An account of the resource
This article covers the first-ever sorority rush that took place at the University of Richmond. Alison Bartel, assistant director of student affairs, organized and led all of the activities throughout this busy week and created a program that included an orientation, sorority “parties”, and sorority meetings. The orientation at the start of the week introduced the process of Rush to the rushees and provided detailed directions to the women involved. Open house meetings introduced each rushee to each of the six sororities and gave everyone their first impressions of the program. Sorority parties were attended by invitation only and allowed for sororities to get to know the rushees on a more intimate level. Throughout the week, a lot of rushees voiced their opinions on the Rush process, going so far as to saying, “I had the best interview, I stayed 20 minutes longer than I was supposed to,” compared to, “I can't stand this, I feel like just quitting.” The process of choosing a final sorority all came down to the individual’s preference along with the sorority’s choice of members.

The University of Richmond’s foreign language department hosted a Latin American Awareness Week during the spring of 1987. It included a host of different “speakers, films, a roundtable discussion and a party at the language apartments… the purpose was to enlighten the audiences about social, economic and cultural aspects of Latin American countries, and also about U.S.-Latin American relations.”
