The announcement notes that 800 students attended the Carnival in the previous year, and that, as in 1939, the proceeds from the 1940 Carnival would go to "the alumni fund for the proposed student center building." Description An account of the resource This is an article published in The Richmond Times-Dispatch in 1939 announcing the University Players’ production of Shakespeare’s “The Merry Wives of Windsor”, directed by Alton Williams and stage managed by Carlson Thomas of Danville. Mrs. Dianne Kennedy Pike, wife of the late Dr. James A. Pike, and associate professor of religion at Wesley University, Dr. John David Maguire, will be speaking. Mrs. Pike is described as the director of the New Focus Foundation, which was started by her late husband. The foundation is attempting to understand the communication of religious ideals outside the institutional structure of the church. Dr. Maguire was a former <a href="https://kinginstitute.stanford.edu/encyclopedia/freedom-rides" target="_blank">Freedom Rider</a>, and was imprisoned in 1961 for "challenging segregated terminal facilities."
