He was granted tenure by the University in 1983. He received his BA in philosophy and physics at Yale and studied physics in graduate school at the University of Maryland. Simpson has also done writing and research in African culture and philosophy and the effects of modernization in traditional communities. Although Simpson was concerned with the "high degree of racial homogeneity within the student body and the faculty," he states that the University of Richmond was "more optimistic than most places" due to the $50 million dollar gift from E. Claiborne Robins to the University. He also asserts that the University had "a spirit that indicated that the place was attempting to grow." Simpson hopes his tenure does not discourage the University from trying to achieve more diversity among faculty.</text>

Speaker Catherine Clinton argued that "serious consideration of women is marred by sexism in history," and that the role of women in the South has been overlooked as "the history of Southern women ends virtually with World War II." Speaker Martha Swain discussed how Southern women were "an organizing force in communities" and asserted that the existence of some national organizations such as the Daughters of the American Revolution, Society for American College Women, and Mothers Against Drunk Drivers is due to the efforts of Southern women. Speaker Sharon Harley spoke on the intersectionality of race, class, and gender in regards to black women in Southern urban cities such as Baltimore, Washington D.C., and Birmingham. Speaker Lois Helmbold lectured on "the Depression's effect on working-class black and white women in the South, and she argued that "sexism, classism, and racism have not disappeared; they have just taken other forms."</text>

The 1962 production focused on the Spanish "Woman." Fourteen short selections were presented as a tableau series. All the works were by Spanish or Latin-American authors and conducted completely in Spanish. The articles notes that "a few Latin-Americans have been included because of their concernw ith Spain and their relative freedom from New World influence." All Spanish classes were part of the production, although not all students taking Spanish were in it. A photograph of Karen Curtis and Linda Holt in rehearsal accompanies the article.</text>

<text>This article describes the debut of a new University of Richmond mascot, which had been absent from sporting event for 20 years according to the article. (<a href="http://memory.richmond.edu/items/show/2894" target="_blank">In 1948, students in Lambda Chi Alpha constructed a mascot with help from outside manufacturers and the creator of the Confederate spider mascot, School Shop manager Buddy Mayo</a>.) John Millard, a senior at Richmond College, commissioned and wore the costume. He used a picture of the "UR Spider man" and a Confederate uniform for the design, which he brought to six tailors before a friend made the costume. The saber came from the ROTC Department. Millard stated that the costume had received positive attention at a pep rally and the first football game, adn he hoped students would "take up his cause." The article includes a photograph of Millard in the mascot costume along with cheerleaders Bonnie Bowman, Carol Henry, and Carty Richards.</text>

The theme was insane asylum, largely due to the fact that it could be executed with a tight budget, particularly its costumes. The biggest challenge according to Turner and Clohan was making sure that their layout and materials, including the corridors made of black curtains, met fire safety standards. $350 of University Players’ own money was spent on the project, but with a $3 admission price, Turner hopes that the haunted house will fund itself in the future. Plans for next year’s haunted house are already under way.</text>

Director William Lockey decided to reorient the familial feud to be about bootlegged whiskey, with the set designed to look like a bar. Rather than poison, Romeo was pushed into a drug purchase and died from an overdose. Darg highlighted Andre Bruce Ward's costume design, which was also modeled after <em>The Great Gatsby</em> with a white, summer, flapper theme. The play took place on April 17-19 in Camp Memorial Theatre at 8:15 p.m.</text>
