(<a href="http://memory.richmond.edu/items/show/2894" target="_blank">In 1948, students in Lambda Chi Alpha constructed a mascot with help from outside manufacturers and the creator of the Confederate spider mascot, School Shop manager Buddy Mayo</a>.) John Millard, a senior at Richmond College, commissioned and wore the costume. He used a picture of the "UR Spider man" and a Confederate uniform for the design, which he brought to six tailors before a friend made the costume. The saber came from the ROTC Department. Millard stated that the costume had received positive attention at a pep rally and the first football game, adn he hoped students would "take up his cause." The article includes a photograph of Millard in the mascot costume along with cheerleaders Bonnie Bowman, Carol Henry, and Carty Richards.</text>

He was granted tenure by the University in 1983. He received his BA in philosophy and physics at Yale and studied physics in graduate school at the University of Maryland. Simpson has also done writing and research in African culture and philosophy and the effects of modernization in traditional communities. Although Simpson was concerned with the "high degree of racial homogeneity within the student body and the faculty," he states that the University of Richmond was "more optimistic than most places" due to the $50 million dollar gift from E. Claiborne Robins to the University. He also asserts that the University had "a spirit that indicated that the place was attempting to grow." Simpson hopes his tenure does not discourage the University from trying to achieve more diversity among faculty.</text>

<text>This article desribes the process through which Anita Bryant, a singer and opponent of civil rights for LGBTQ individuals, was invited to the Robins Center on October 8, 1977. <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anita_Bryant#Political_campaigning" target="_blank">Bryant's efforts led to repeals of anti-discriminiation on the basis of sexual orientation ordinances and further discrimination against LGBTQ people across the country.</a> Bryant had been invited to perform at a rally to kick of the ACTION program in Richmond, designed by the Sunday School Board of the Southern Baptist Convention to "assist local chuches in recruiting more people for Bible study in their Sunday schools." Bryant was asked to attend the rally to perform a "concert of sacred music." Dr. Linwood Horne, associate chaplain at the University of Richmond, assited in the planning. According to Dr. Winford Hendrix of Richmond's First Baptist Church, the contract with Bryant was signed before "Bryan't involvement in the controvery over homosexual rights" and the churches did not feel they could break it. The event was not public, and there would be no press conference, but would involve an autograph signing and the sale of books. Horne specified that Bryant was not being sponsored by the Chaplain's Office, but the location was chosen partially because of the university's Baptist affiliation.
<p>The Richmond Citizens for Gay and Lesbian Rights (RCFLR) planned a protest event for the same day in Monroe Park. RCFLR planned to educate through speakers about the "discrimination that is occuring against gays and lesbians."</p></text>

The woman is in costume and is standing next to another woman who is wearing what looks to be a white suit. The woman in blackface is dressed in a costume that was typical of the stereotypical "Mammy" representation. The "Mammy" figure is an archetype for a Southern black woman during the Antebellum period and the term itself is known as a derogatory and racist word due to the fact that it represents the oppression of many black women during slavery.&nbsp; The image of the "Mammy" character usually includes dress that would be appropriate for completing housework (i.e.: an apron, a bonnet or head wrap, a basic dress), as the Westhampton student seems to be dressed in the photograph. It is included on a page called "Odds and Ends" which features candid shots of other Westhampton College women's activities.</text>
