Wade decision concerning abortion. More than 300,000 people marched at this rally, making it "the biggest march on Washington since the Civil Rights rally of August 28, 1963." Westhampton College sophomore Lisa Lindstrom expresses her disappointment that more students did not attend the rally, but she was surprised that the "majority of the participants were 30 or older" as she had "expected mostly younger people to march." She also remarks that "as many guys as girls marched" and that there were also "equal rights' supporters, lesbians and gay people" at the rally. Lindstrom observed grandmothers and families wearing buttons that said things like "Another Grandmother for Choice" and "Four Generations for Pro-Choice." Meghan Matulka, also a Westhampton College sophomore, attended the march with her brother, his fiance and his fiance's family. Matulka expresses her surprise at seeing how far people had come to attend the rally as flags of many countries and states were represented. Matulka states that the rally shows that "a lot of people still believe in the saying that 'If one is oppressed, we all are.'" Director of Religious Activities Jean Mahaffey said that the purpose of the lecture was to be "educational and informative" and in no way was advocating for the use of birth control. Dr. Maltese talked about The Dalton Shield and The Pill as two contraceptives with very low failure rates while addressing a group of 50 Westhampton College women. She further referred to abortion after the end of second month as "feticide" and argued that the government should set a time limit on when an abortion can be performed. According to her, sterilization as a method of birth control should only be used on a woman suffering from "mental retardation." The lecture series also dealt with the issue of overpopulation as one that leads to poverty and emotional illness. Mrs. Leroy Brown, a psychologist also present at the lecture series, stressed that premarital sex must be "carefully considered" and one should only engage in it once one is ready. Description An account of the resource This letter to the editor is written by a Westhampton College student, Katherine Sanford, in response to an anti-abortion article that was published in The Collegian. Sanford describes her feelings of outrage and anger over the article that was “terrifyingly anti-female.” She shares that she is a survivor of abuse and when confessing this to the authorities, states that no one believed her.
