David B. Nickerson, a visiting lecturer of the Religious Activities Council and director of the Southern Field Service Escru. Nickerson focused on the identity of black people in communities, specifically on why white people did not understand the identity crisis of black people. Nickerson referenced black people feeling ashamed of the color of their skin because they have only had negative experiences with social conflicts regarding their skin color. Nickerson also stressed that the emphasis black communities have on "Black Power" is not a threat to the white community but a cry for racial awareness, and stated he did not agree with the "extremism" of Rap Brown and Stokley Carmichael, and that only 5% of the 22 million black people in the United States did. Description An account of the resource This letter was sent on April 13, 1954, by L. Maynard Catchings to George M. Modlin, the President of the University of Richmond. Catchings wrote to Modlin regarding racial integration at the university. Catchings was a part of the Student Movement of the YMCA, a Christian organization that "aided students in overcoming racial prejudices" because it is "the basic Christian belief that, all men are brothers under God, and that discrimination on grounds of race creates a serious gap between our belief and our practices." The Student Movement of the YMCA sponsored interracial student-faculty conferences. Catchings wanted to offer his organization’s services to the university and other private, Southern, Christian colleges. He also asked Modlin questions about racial integration at the university. Cook's main argument is that while the university prides itself on being an advanced forward-looking liberal institution, it continues to hold on to its discriminatory policies, a problem Cook admits many Baptist universities faced. Cook also argues that the university's role should be not only to stick to traditional views and norms, but to take active steps in order to push society forward, as to avoid doing so would represent the institution's comfortable place within the past, resulting in the loss of its academic integrity. The article concludes with the statement that for the university to continue to practice segregation would be to fail the students and graduates of the school. Such actions would teach students that it is okay for them to live morally uneducated lives by encouraging close-mindedness and bigotry. Dick Gregory was a black comedian, author, actor, activist, and civil rights leader. His speech was attended by a crowd of about 800, mainly consisting of students. Gregory states that the duty of young people is to "get blamed for everything" as they are the "new American nigger" and "Indian," however, he asserts that the young people are key to solving "this country's problems." Gregory goes on to elaborate that minorities are scapegoats that are blamed for all of the country's problems. He points out racism in the United States as "beautiful people" such as Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Malcolm X are being wiped out while others are ignored by the police. He states that this racism has trickled down to the black youth. He gives an example of a five-year-old black boy who, when asked to draw himself, draws a picture of an animal—Gregory views this is a result of black people being stereotyped as wrongdoers while those in policy-making positions are white. Gregory argues that black people in America are "reacting to your racism." After Dick Gregory's speech, many alumni were irate and sent letters to President Modlin articulating their concerns that he was allowed to speak on campus. Some alumni even ceased their donations, but President Modlin affirmed the principle of free speech as essential to the University. In 1973, Dick Gregory returned to campus to speak in another lecture series.
