During this time, the University of Richmond band would carry the Confederate flag during sporting events and play "Dixie" so often that it became the unofficial theme song for the university. The editorial argues that this ritual is inappropriate, especially for a group that is supposed to represent the university. The editorial called for the band to find a different song to play and for the university to "erase its all-white 'Southern' image." The piece is accompanied by a cartoon, featuring a window. The blind of the window is rolling up, and the blind features a Confederate flag and reads "UofR All White Image." As the blind rolls up, the window displays a brick wall with another Confederate flag and reads "Welcome to Richmond VA."</text>

In this piece, Moser argues that American culture has begun to dehumanize terrorists in favor of violence and death. Near the end of his piece, Moser asks the reader to consider why terrorists are committing their actions, and to analyze our hatred of terrorists, but also to analyze terrorist's hate for the U.S.</text>

The article takes a satirical tone in demanding a number of amenities including an emphasis on multicultural awareness. The author mentions the Multicultural Student Union and its events, but states that "nine out of 10 students haven't been to one of its events." The author also questions the existence of the Asian Student Union and the need to keep organization websites updated. Lastly, the author comments that he would like to see the university "fostering a full spectrum of events and ideas."</text>

<text>This Op-Ed published in <em>The Collegian</em> features two opinion articles arguing for opposing views on affirmative action. The first was written by student Danielle Orron who wrote in support of affirmative action. In her piece, Orron followed a "question-answer" style of writing in which she asks the reader to "imagine you are ___," followed by "Affirmative action says you ____." In this way, she challenges the reader to place themselves in the position that those who benefit from affirmative action are in, and then reaffirms them by dismissing the stereotypes held against these people. The second piece, written by student Michael Herbert, was in opposition of affirmative action, but rather than writing solely his opinion, instead, Herbert focused on the way the discussion was held. According to Herbert, after a comment made by classics department professor, Julie Laskaris, his peers were "so intimidated by Larskaris' statements they became unwilling to offer their opinions." Herbert goes on to compare this incident to McCarthyism, but instead of red-baiting people have now resorted to race-baiting in which, "Mere charges of racism are enough to cost people their jobs or end the careers of public officials." He ends by expressing his desire to engage in "intellectual diversity" rather than engaging in hurtful "ad hominem attacks."</text>

<text>This document is a memo from William H. Leftwich to E. Bruce Heilman and Charles E. Glassick that was sent on November 26, 1973. Leftwich wrote to Heilman and Glassick about the Student Organization for Black Awareness (SOBA) at the University of Richmond; Leftwich helped black students create the group and wrote of it: "their purposes are social in nature, as well as serving as a vehicle for black identity and visibility." According to Leftwich, the group was having problems due to a lack of purpose and goals, and Jim Sartain, their advisor, and Dick Mateer, whose position is not named, were trying to help and work with the group. SOBA’s President, Stanley Davis, and other members had asked to meet with the University Administration, so Leftwich asked Heilman and Glassick to attend SOBA’s meeting to show the university’s interest in the group and black students. Attached to the letter was a handwritten note from Sartain about his two-and-a-half-hour meeting with SOBA, and he told Leftwich to be prepared for SOBA to request a "two-way informational meeting" with the University Administration. At the bottom of this handwritten note, the word "WARNING" is written in red. A blog post about this item can be found <a href="https://blog.richmond.edu/memory/2016/10/20/this-week-in-the-archive-the-soba-memo/" target="_blank">here.</a></text>

<text>This letter to the editor, written by University of Richmond student Peter R. Neal, was published in <em>The Collegian</em> on November 21, 1958. Neal wrote that on November 7, two weeks earlier, a black basketball player was permitted in the dining hall, the first time a non-white student was allowed to eat in the building. It was an indication, as Neal intimated, that the university was distancing itself from a policy that barred white students from "fraternizing" with black people. This has been a different case with a student from Virginia Union was barred from eating at the Westhampton College dining hall the year before. Neal noted that Wake Forest students had called for integration, adn students at the University of Richmond should follow. Neal wrote that the university -- as a supposedly Christian institution -- should go further and integrate, and that the student body should lead a movement to ensure such integration. Neal said that in spite of any financial implications, "In the long run our school will be better off, I'm sure."</text>

Catchings wrote to Modlin regarding racial integration at the university. Catchings was a part of the Student Movement of the YMCA, a Christian organization that "aided students in overcoming racial prejudices" because it is "the basic Christian belief that, all men are brothers under God, and that discrimination on grounds of race creates a serious gap between our belief and our practices." The Student Movement of the YMCA sponsored interracial student-faculty conferences. Catchings wanted to offer his organization’s services to the university and other private, Southern, Christian colleges. He also asked Modlin questions about racial integration at the university.</text>

Ranson wrote to Modlin urging him to end segregation at the university. He believed that it is "a primary principle of the Faith, that is the equality and brotherhood of all men" and, considering the Brown v. Board of Education ruling, Baptists would be ridiculed by other religions if they did not integrate. In integrated schools in states that practiced segregation, "the acceptance and compliance by students and local citizens has been surprisingly good." Southern Baptists had also begun admitting black people to all of their seminaries. Ranson believed that if the university integrated, it would "experience no injury" and "profit greatly."</text>

<text>On September 10, 1963, Executive Director of the University of Richmond Young Democratic Club, Dabney Lee, wrote the Mayor of Farmville, Virginia, William Watkins, on behalf of a black minister, Rev. L. F. Griffin, in Farmville. Lee began the letter by expressing the importance of having an increase in both the quantity and quality of public accommodations in Farmville. He believed that Farmville officials should already know that businesses shouldn't be able to discriminate, and should treat all customers equally, regardless of race. Lee then made a list of requests to the administration of the Mayor: remove discriminatory practices in hiring, "the immediate hiring of colored policemen," end segregation, conduct a study to facilitate better housing for all citizens, and to construct "bi-racial committees...to make progress towards a truly American community." The University of Richmond Secretary-Treasurer, Charles Wheeler III, notified President Modlin of this letter on October 4, 1963. Wheeler had previously had a conversation with Dabney Lee, and Lee claimed that the letter was his idea and the Young Democratic Club did not approve the letter, "but he was sure that was the feeling of the Club."</text>
