The letter was regarding an incident where an African American speaker was not permitted to eat with students in the dining hall after his lecture. This article states that the petition created to combat this incident was "met with enthusiastic response from the campus." This document states that students had gathered on their own to create these petitions to submit to the administration. This article also includes a copy of the petition. Cook's main argument is that while the university prides itself on being an advanced forward-looking liberal institution, it continues to hold on to its discriminatory policies, a problem Cook admits many Baptist universities faced. Cook also argues that the university's role should be not only to stick to traditional views and norms, but to take active steps in order to push society forward, as to avoid doing so would represent the institution's comfortable place within the past, resulting in the loss of its academic integrity. The article concludes with the statement that for the university to continue to practice segregation would be to fail the students and graduates of the school. Such actions would teach students that it is okay for them to live morally uneducated lives by encouraging close-mindedness and bigotry. As a part of the Westhampton College Lecture Committee's "Dimension '69 Week," Height spoke about how young women at the university had a responsibility to become involved in building a prosperous community of women on campus. Height encouraged the women to step out of the traditional roles historically assigned to them and instead demand better lives for themselves and other members of the community who have historically been put down, including Black people and the poor. E. Dick Howard (RC '54). At the time, Howard was preparing for a career in law at the University of Virginia, prior to which he spent time studying philosophy, politics, and economics. Howard discusses an assertion made by an Oxford graduate: "If we were going to boycott South African goods, then we should boycott goods made in the Southern States of America, for the Negro there is as oppressed as in South Africa." During this time, the University of Richmond band would carry the Confederate flag during sporting events and play "Dixie" so often that it became the unofficial theme song for the university. David B. Nickerson, a visiting lecturer of the Religious Activities Council and director of the Southern Field Service Escru. Nickerson focused on the identity of black people in communities, specifically on why white people did not understand the identity crisis of black people. Nickerson referenced black people feeling ashamed of the color of their skin because they have only had negative experiences with social conflicts regarding their skin color. Nickerson also stressed that the emphasis black communities have on "Black Power" is not a threat to the white community but a cry for racial awareness, and stated he did not agree with the "extremism" of Rap Brown and Stokley Carmichael, and that only 5% of the 22 million black people in the United States did. Nickerson also visited some religion courses, and the lecture was held at the Westhampton College sophomore class coffee house.
