Cotten says that the adoption was done in the spirit of Christmas, and that they entertained a child named Hung Woo. Cotten then claims to have interviewed the visitor and asked him about the origin of his name. He tells a story of how in Ancient China, a jury of elders was hung when they could not decide whether or not they should woo. Thus, the child was named in honor of that event. He then says that at the end of the interview, Woo made a comment about kissing with your eyes open, and he quotes it with no pronouns, supposedly as a reference to how Woo speaks. This narrative is followed by a letter in which a Westhampton girl implores Cotten to encourage more Richmond College boys to ask girls on dates. Hudgins, wrote this letter to President of the University of Richmond, George M. Modlin, on February 20, 1967, to follow-up on the possibility of enrolling a Chinese student at Westhampton College. Minister Hudgins had completed this young woman's application and transcript forms, however, after a conversation with the Westhampton College registrar, he got the feeling that student may not thrive academically. Because of this, Minister Hudgins was now attempting to get her enrolled at Averett College and expressed his hope that if after two years the unnamed student proved herself, she could transfer to Westhampton College. He ended the letter by asking President Modlin if the "Oriental Scholarship fund" could be used to support this student's education. Quong refers to himself as a Chinese student and is a member of the Chinese Club where in 1929, his Freshman year, he was the toastmaster for a dinner held for eleven faculty members where he expressed gratitude on behalf of the Chinese students for the acceptance they have felt and the kindness they have been shown in this country. This gathering celebrated with Chinese food in traditional Cantonese style, which the December 1929 Collegian claims "added to the Oriental effect." So it seems that the Chinese Club and its members felt included and a sense of belonging in Virginia although terms such as Oriental were still used to describe their Chinese cultural background.
