Description An account of the resource This document is a 1950 census from Richmond, Virginia. In this census, people were classified as white or non-white. During this time, there were more white than non-white people in the city of Richmond. However, on the East and North sides, there were some areas that had more non-white people than white people, and on the West side, there were some areas that had more white people than non-white people. In addition, there were more non-white families who reported earning less than $2,000 a year and there were no non-white families who reported earning $10,000 or more per year. Description An account of the resource In this 1964 letter, J. Guthrie Smith sends University of Richmond President George M. Modlin an article from the New York Times. The article, entitled "City Campus: Dollar Asset," discusses the relationship between universities and urban renewal. The unnamed author writes, "When Harvard was founded, the location of rural Cambridge was chosen in order to escape the ‘moral rot’ of Boston." Since then, universities have been "swallowed up" by urban expansion; consequently, crime rates have decreased and tax collections increased, and out-of-town students largely contribute to the local economy. The University moved from it's city location to the current campus in 1914. Description An account of the resource This document is a letter from Edwin P. Conquest, the Chairman of Richmond Forward, to President George M. Modlin. Conquest wrote to Modlin on March 11, 1965, to inform him of Richmond Forward&rsquo;s resolution which was unanimously passed on March 10, 1965. Richmond Forward was interested in "the best possible government for Richmond and in determining the best possible method of solving our urban problems" and felt it necessary to conduct non-partisan research on Richmond&rsquo;s "urban problems." In addition, they requested the University of Richmond&rsquo;s help to "set up the appropriate department to undertake non-partisan research into the problems facing the City of Richmond and the two adjacent counties, Henrico and Chesterfield." It is unclear what Richmond Forward means by "urban problems," but is likely tied to nationwide efforts towards urban renewal. Urban renewal often destroyed historical landmarks and neighborhoods, many of them populated by marginalized communities. Description An account of the resource In this 1951 letter from Edmond H. Brill, Jr. to Dr. George M. Modlin, Brill attaches a script for Modlin to read on Radio Station WRNL. At this time, Modlin served as the President of the Richmond Chamber of Commerce; the speech explains that the Chamber is concerned about the traffic problems in Richmond. They believe that constructing a freeway would solve this problem and the speech outlines three reasons why the Chamber supports the freeway: it will be effective, convenient, and safe for people; it has been endorsed by every traffic authority; and it will be "soundly financed." Towards the end of the speech, Brill writes, "It is most unfortunate that a Freeway cannot be located and constructed anywhere without affecting the interests of some individuals, business firms, and institutions." However, it does not go into detail about who these people are and the negative impact the freeway may have on these groups. <a href="http://dig.library.vcu.edu/cdm/landingpage/collection/jwh" target="_blank">The Richmond-Petersburg Turnpike (now part of I-95) would eventually be run through Jackson Ward, a historic black neighborhood in Richmond, which was also the center of economic vitality for black Richmonders.
