<text>President Richard L. Morrill and members of the senior staff decided not to send in dues to the Association of Southern Baptist Colleges and Schools this year. According to University of Richmond Chaplain David D. Burhans, the decision was made because the University was not attending association meeting and was not receiving any benefit from the relationship. Burhans argues that although the University has had an indirect tie to the SBC for 165 years, he would rather hear the University described as “a small, private liberal arts university in the South that is related to the church” than as a “conservative Southern Baptist school”. Frank E. Eakin, chairman of the religion department, was unaware of the decision yet supports it. Wake Forest University also did not renew its membership to the SBC, according to Ellen Dockham, media relations officer at Wake Forest University.</text>

<text>This article addresses the University of Richmond's investments in South Africa during apartheid. It explains how different governments are divesting in South African companies following the Sullivan Principles, a set of guidelines a company must follow regarding diversity and protesting the apartheid state in South Africa, a government system founded on racial segregation. President Heilman had revealed that the University does have investments in South Africa, but was unsure of their extent, and the Board of Trustees had appointed a committee chaired by Stanley F. Pauley to investigate the university's portfolio and consider divestment. The university had had a similar committee a few years prior. The university's first black tenured professor, Dr. Lorenzo Simpson, is quoted: "Selective divestment (according to the Sullivan Principles) is a way of prematurely diffusing outrage...I'm not criticizing the Sullivan principles, I'm saying that they don't go far enough."</text>

On June 7th, the University of Richmond awarded its first honorary degree to a black person, Dr. Allix B. James, who received a doctorate of laws. James was the president of Virginia Union University, a historically black institution of higher education. Five other people also received honorary degrees: President George M. Modlin; Judge Fred H. Caplan, Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Appeals of West Virginia; and Charles H. Ryland of Warsaw, a University of Richmond trustee; Reverend F. <text>This article talks about how the President of Virginia Union University (VUU), Thomas H. Henderson, was on board with the idea of having a faculty exchange with the University of Richmond. President of the University of Richmond, George Modlin, had no comment on the possible exchange or a recent federal notification ordering the university to integrate in order to receive further federal funding. Both the universities are Baptist affiliated. VUU, a historically black university (HBCU), had dozens of white students and faculty while UR, a predominantly white and segregated school, had only two black students. VUU was currently carrying out a similar exchange program with the the all-white Methodist Randolph Macon College which only had one or two black students and no black faculty. The government suggested that UR should also send some of its student teachers to practice in black schools in the Richmond Public School system. This talk of desegregation resurfaced the hesistance shown by University official during accepting federal funding. The federal government threatened to pull out the federal funding to the school if UR failed to integrate. UR only recently received its federal funding of one million for dormitory construction after long discussion and consultation with the major Baptist bodies associated with the university.</text>

<text>This <em>Collegian</em> article, written by features editor Don Owen, is about a proposed faculty exchange with Virginia Union, a local, historically black university. The exchange, which was proposed by the United States Department of Health, Education, and Welfare (HEW)&nbsp; -- the precursor to the Departments of Education and Health and Human Services -- was welcomed by Thomas Henderson, the president of Virginia Union, but Dr. George Modlin, the president of the University of Richmond, did not comment. The Department of Health, Education, and Welfare also recommended that University of Richmond student teachers work in local, predominantly black schools. The university had enrolled black students prior to 1968, but only in summer classes and courses offered at University College -- the university's downtown satellite campus. In fall 1968, three black students attended Westhampton College and one attended Richmond College. Only the Richmond College student is named--Barry Greene--who was the first residential black student on campus. The article also notes three black commuter students at Westhampton College, but does not name them. They were Madieth Malone, Isabelle Thomas, and Josephine Ethel Otey.&nbsp;</text>

<text>This is a letter from the Secretary of Health, Education, and Welfare, Joseph A. Califano Jr, to various university presidents. He states that he has enclosed the remarks he delivered at the commencement at the College of New Rochelle in New Rochelle, New York. In the speech, which is 10 pages, Calfano emphasizes the themes of diversity in higher education and the desire of the federal government not to unduly intrude into the operation of academic institutions. In the speech he quotes President Lyndon Johnson by saying education was the first work of the nation. He also references President Carter’s commitment to education. Calfano warns that if we use a quick fix to fix the United States education system we could eventually start to look like "Mussolini’s Italy." Califano says that small liberal arts colleges across America, such as the College of New Rochelle, have played a drastic role in the education system. Calfano references the fact that the Federal Government has recently become much more involved in higher education, which can be seen in the fact that many graduates are graduating because they got Federal assistance. Califano says that higher education will work, even without help from Washington. Calfano discusses the many graduates in the crowd, such as an 81 year-old woman named Mrs. May Dobson. Calfano congratulates the university for recently founding a new institution: The School of New Resources. He ends the speech with a parochial comment.</text>

The petition in question was created and signed by students in response to the denial of a black guest speaker's entrance into the university's dining hall, preventing him from eating with students of the university. Though Boatwright claimed he had no knowledge of the incident nor the following emotional reaction of the student body, he went on to admit his belief that the dining hall was not the appropriate place for such instances of integration to take place. Such action, according to Boatwright, was against the historical culture of the school and might force a part of the student body to feel uncomfortable in the public space of the institution. Boatwright concluded that students should only attempt to invite black individuals to eat with them in private spaces, as it is only there that they could be sure everyone involved in the event is involved voluntarily.</text>

<text>This editorial, "Censored," was published in <em>The Collegian</em> on May 17 1968, by an unnamed author. It was written in reference to a decision made by the Board of Publications, the newspaper's publisher, to not allow <em>The Collegian</em> to publish a sex morality survey. Voicing <em>The Collegian's</em> opinion, the author wrote that they believed that two of the Board's reasons--that it is not <em>The Collegian's</em> purpose to create news and the questions were not formulated properly--were invalid, but agreed that they may not have conducted the survey correctly. The author questions the Board's reason for censoring <em>The Collegian</em> and addressed the concern that the survey could be harmful to the university; they wrote that it is important to "face life as it is" and not "bury our heads in the sand." Addressing the Board's concerns, the author wrote that the newspaper did not create the situations in the survey since illegal drug use and premarital sex existed on the campus and elsewhere for many years, and claimed that their audience may be interested in their findings; in addition, the questions were taken from the College of William and Mary's survey, which was created with the sociology department's help. In regards to the concern that the survey was not conducted correctly, the author claimed that they would have prefaced the article with the survey's shortcomings and that the Board should have consulted the newspaper before making its decision. The author hoped that "the precedent of censorship in this instance will never be used again."</text>
