<text>This article describes the steps that the University of Richmond took in order to bring sororities to Westhampton College. After the faculty committee voted to “recommend the institution of sororities at the University,” the social life committee reviewed the recommendation and forwarded it to the student affairs committee of the Board of Trustees. Once the Board of Trustees approved the recommendation, Alison Bartel, assistant director of Student Activities, took over the organization of Greek Life on campus and contacted the National Panhellenic Council. A committee was set up in order to review the presentations by each of the (26) national sororities and to vote on which ones were best fit for the University of Richmond. Although there are many who are in favor of establishing sororities on campus, others, like history professor Martin J. Ryle, believe that they will turn out to be exactly like fraternities in that they may be exclusive and harmful to the student social life.</text>

Both Vest and the dean of Westhampton College, Stephanie Bennett, agree that a good sorority system would be “very healthy for the University's overall system." Originally, sororities were discouraged because the university was thought to be too small to sustain such organizations. Now that the university has grown in size, students are advocating to have sororities. The results of the questionnaire will be presented to the Board of Trustees, and if approved by the board, faculty, and WC students, formal invitations will be sent to national sororities.</text>

Westhampton College junior, Laura Green, alongside other members of W.I.S.E., created a referendum that required a 51% majority vote for action to be taken on the issue of sororities. A similar vote was attempted in the past but there was, “excessive neutrality,” amongst WC students. In an effort to increase interest in sororities, Green has organized events where sorority members and alumnae from other universities act as guest speakers to share their experiences with Greek life.</text>

After reminding him of the two recent reports of racism at the fraternities, the first by Pamela Johnson and the second by Harvey Whitney, Ciccarone questions the fraternity’s insistence on “brotherhood” by referencing the social segregation instilled by the Greek system at the E. Bruce Heilman Dining Center in the form of a personal experience. Ciccarone then critiques the hazing culture associated with fraternities, and the lack of sincere socialization among sorority members who, “didn’t speak to any of the freshmen until sorority rush.” She concludes by adding that the fraternity’s threat to stop raising money for the school is immaterial, and that she, “look[s] forward to dinner at his table.”</text>

The writer creates a mock scenario at a party and describes a play by play situation where a male student is intoxicated and unsuccessfully attempts to speak to a girl who he’s interested in. The tone of the article is sarcastic as the writer states that “a sororities rush would be ideal for the guys.” The prominent disgust directed towards those in charge of deciding the fate of sororities is displayed in the article as the writer concludes that, “looking at things through this new angle might change their minds."</text>

The vote against bringing sororities on campus “was strongest amongst the freshmen and sophomores,” which proved to members of opposing organizations, such as ‘We Care’, that Greek life was not appropriate for the students of Westhampton. Opinions by both of the groups explaining why sororities were unnecessary or necessary worked to persuade students who attended the forum.</text>

Despite there being nine historically black sororities and fraternities, the article mentions that only one black sorority, Delta Sigma Theta (DST), has a charter at UR. Juletta Tyson, the president of UR’s DST chapter--which was chartered just three years before this article was published--expressed that the difficulty in obtaining a charter exists in the lack of numbers given the small black population at UR. The unofficial members of AKA declined to comment on the process of obtaining a charter for fear that it would negatively affect their ability to start an official chapter.</text>

The dining hall staff -- composed mostly of racial minorities -- decided on a theme called "Revival of the 60s." The first black student was not allowed to integrate onto the main campus of UR until 1968. According to Kenneth Davis, manager of Food Services, historical memorabilia and posters of black leaders would be posted around the dining hall and meat "representative of the theme" would be served. The performances during Black History Month would be sponsored by the Multicultural Student Union whose president, Camisha Jones, explains how the organization was sponsoring most of the events in collaboration with other student organizations. Delta Sigma Theta member, Nikki Anderson, was also interviewed and explained that the sorority was working the Young Democrats to bring Richmond mayor Walter Kenney to speak at an event.</text>
