<text>This letter to the editor was written in response to a lead story on the resignation of Michael White, former chairman of the Judicial Council of Richmond College. White’s resignation stemmed from the decision of Richard Mateer, Dean of Richmond College, to modify the Judicial Council’s sentence regarding a University of Richmond student’s larceny convictions on campus. This letter questions the way in which the Collegian addressed White’s resignation and the surrounding case of a black student convicted of larceny. According to the article, White’s resignation is a racial issue because of the way he responded to the treatment of a black student who convicted larceny at the university. Additionally, the author claims that the way The Collegian presented the story was unethical to journalistic practice and played into stereotypes about black students and particularly black student athletes on campus. The writer of this letter, James H. Cones, III, was the chair of the Student Organization for Black Awareness (SOBA).</text>

Davis begins her opinion piece highlighting the "backlash" that many feminists get due to the media stereotypes that are placed upon then as "bra-burning, family-hating, lesbians." Davis expresses her disappoint in newspaper for not covering Faludi's discussion, and points out that this adds to the backlash, as students are not able to learn about what feminism truly stands for.</text>

Garcia takes issue with the Collegian "promoting homosexuality" in an increased amount of articles regarding homosexuality. Garcia's main point is that the articles in The Collegian should reflect the student body, and the majority of the student body is not homosexual, therefore the paper should change to reflect that. Garcia states that such articles are "placing the University's reputation" with alumni, parents and outside readers in jeopardy.</text>

Hummel states that the Collegian tries to act as any press company would, which means reporting on the trial before it happens. They only mentioned that Jim Palmer, accused of harassment, was in Phi Delt because the members of Phi Delt on the Judicial Council will have to remove themselves from the trial. Her bottom line is that, even though they are in college, that doesn't mean students aren't accountable for their actions.</text>

<text>This document is a letter from "JEN" (likely initials) sent to GMM (President George M. Modlin) on May 27, 1968. The identities of GMM and Jen were not stated, but the letter was found in President Modlin's collection and "GMM" are his initials. According to the letter, recent events supported JEN’s advice to The Collegian to publish a survey, which "would have created hardly an upturned eyebrow; the censorship has been widely deplored." The UR Board of Publications chose to not publish this survey which sought to ask students about attitudes towards sex on campus. JEN also wrote about a "marijuana episode" in which they recommended that "the University say that one professor had been permitted to resign and four students had been asked to resign in connection with an investigation of the use of marijuana on the University campus." If they had followed JEN's advice, this "forthrightness" would have been a "plus" instead of "repeated [minuses?] we got as rumors were reported in the press and on the radio." A Collegian article about this incident may be found here.</text>

Modlin wrote to Neal in response to the latter’s May 22, 1968 letter regarding a survey on students’ sexual practices that was not allowed to be published in The Collegian. Modlin wrote that students, faculty, and alumni serve on the Board of Publications, and it was students who first voiced their opinion that the survey should not be published due to its "informality" and "irresponsible answers." The psychology department also stated that the survey was "poorly constructed" and "improperly conducted." Modlin wrote that freedom of the press should be enjoyed with "reasonable restraint" and The Collegian was not exercising "responsible and reasonable restraint in this matter" and the survey "would constitute a disservice to the University."</text>

Modlin, the President of the University of Richmond, that was sent on May 22, 1968; Neal mistakenly addressed the letter to "Dr. Charles Modlin." Neal had read in the paper that the university "resorted to what [he considers] an unjustified [censorship] of the press," which referred to a survey on students’ sexual attitudes and activities that was not published in The Collegian at the request of the Board of Publications. Neal believed that the university would receive bad publicity for this action and that The Collegian should be allowed to publish the survey: "The reasons given for refusing publication are invalid." According to Neal, the questions in the survey were also used at the College of William and Mary and were created with the help of the college’s department of sociology. "I agree it is not the function of the Collegian to create news (whatever that means), but in this case, it has not done so." He believed that the students should be able to decide for themselves if the survey was valid. In addition, in 1958, Neal wrote to The Collegian about segregation at the university; "no one listened" and he believed the university suffered because of its segregation policies.</text>

Neal wrote in response to Modlin’s letter regarding a survey on students’ sexual practices that was not allowed to be published in The Collegian. In this letter, Neal questioned Modlin’s reasoning as to why the survey was not published and the necessity for a Board of Publications. Neal wrote that the students on the Board and the psychology department should have allowed The Collegian to publish the survey and written letters to the editor to refute it and point out its shortcomings: "I much prefer a free open discussion of ideas." He wrote in hopes that another survey would be properly conducted in the fall and published in The Collegian with an explanation as to why the first survey was not published. "This would help to dispel the notion that the University is afraid to raise the issue of sex on campus and that the opposition of the Baptist Church was the real reason for the survey not being published."</text>

<text>This article debriefs students on the speech President Boatwright had given at a baptist convention in Atlanta. In it, the author explains the ways President Boatwright spoke out against Nazism, saying it "disrupts the racial and religious issues of nations." The focus then shifts to an emphasis on obligations of religious colleges to teach their students what types of humans to be, to have teachers who set an example of Christianity, and who do well in whatever they attempt. The article did not reference any comments President Boatwright may have made about the disruption of the nation's racial issues, but he did explain that the government should not have control over education, and that the new world would focus on being Christian.</text>
