The sender wrote to Neal regarding a letter he sent about the University of Richmond’s Board of Publications’ decision to not publish a survey about students’ sexual practices in The Collegian. "It was the opinion of the Board that: 1. It is not the function of The Collegian to create news. 2. The survey was improperly conducted. 3. The questionnaire was not properly formulated." The Board was made up of students, faculty, and alumni, and, according to the sender, it was students who first claimed that the survey should not be published due to its informality. The sender wrote that freedom of the press is important but "to enjoy this freedom [any publication] must exercise reasonable restraint"; it was the unanimous decision of the Board that The Collegian was not exercising this restraint and that "the results of the survey would constitute a disservice to the University."</text>

The article referred to a decision by the University of Richmond Board of Publications to "censor The Collegian to prevent anticipated publication of a sex morality survey," which included questions about premarital sex and illegal drug use. According to Dr. William T. Muse, the president of University of Richmond Publications, Inc., the Board's vote was unanimous; the Board claimed that it is not The Collegian's purpose to create news, the survey was not conducted correctly, and the questions were not formulated properly. However, the survey data was collected from assemblies and class meetings and roughly 51% of the student population answered the survey. In addition, the morality survey questions were taken from a similar survey done at the College of William and Mary which had been published in their newspaper, the Flat Hat, and the questions were drafted with help from the college's sociology department.</text>

<text>This editorial, "Censored," was published in The Collegian on May 17 1968, by an unnamed author. It was written in reference to a decision made by the Board of Publications, the newspaper's publisher, to not allow The Collegian to publish a sex morality survey. Voicing The Collegian's opinion, the author wrote that they believed that two of the Board's reasons--that it is not The Collegian's purpose to create news and the questions were not formulated properly--were invalid, but agreed that they may not have conducted the survey correctly. The author questions the Board's reason for censoring The Collegian and addressed the concern that the survey could be harmful to the university; they wrote that it is important to "face life as it is" and not "bury our heads in the sand." Addressing the Board's concerns, the author wrote that the newspaper did not create the situations in the survey since illegal drug use and premarital sex existed on the campus and elsewhere for many years, and claimed that their audience may be interested in their findings; in addition, the questions were taken from the College of William and Mary's survey, which was created with the sociology department's help. In regards to the concern that the survey was not conducted correctly, the author claimed that they would have prefaced the article with the survey's shortcomings and that the Board should have consulted the newspaper before making its decision. The author hoped that "the precedent of censorship in this instance will never be used again."</text>

<text>This article addresses the issue of muted free speech on liberal college campuses. It starts with an anecdote from Baylor University, a similar liberal arts school like the University of Richmond, regarding their administration's cracking down on editors, resulting in multiple firings and revocation of scholarships. The article mentions an issue from 1978 with former professor Dr. Robert S. Alley, whose comments "about Jesus...brought down the wrath of a few local Baptist heavyweights." The article also notes that the university receives $300,000 a year from the Virginia Baptists, which keeps beer ads out of the Collegian. The past fall, the Board of Trustees' Student Affairs Committee voted down "guidelines" for the publication. The writer then explains that while UR's administration has allowed them a large measure of freedom, but there are "cute little veiled threats" that writers must still contend with.</text>

<text>In this oral history interview, Kevin Jones (‘94) sat down with Cole Richard (’21) and Jisu Song (‘22) on June 18, 2019, in Boatwright Memorial Library. Over the course of the one hour interview, Jones discussed his experience as one of the only black students in the business school, as well as his participation in three student groups: Minority Student Union, Asian American Student Association, and Volunteer Action Council. Jones reflects on his active search for diversity while on campus, including his time living in the International House, a dorm for study abroad and four-year international students.

Beyond the social barriers of race, religion, gender, and geography, Kevin LaMarr Jones professes that dance and music have the ability to unite the world. Since graduating from the University of Richmond with a B.S. in Business Administration and Virginia Commonwealth University with a B.F.A. in Dance and Choreography, Jones has become a graphic designer, dancer, choreographer, and producer based in Richmond, Virginia. His dance portfolio includes work with the Latin Ballet of Virginia as a professional company member, in addition to founding, CLAVES UNIDOS, a community-based dance company and academy which connects Richmond, Virginia to the world and gathers its residents around dances of the African diaspora.

Mr. Jones has been cultivating his own Pan-African dance style since the mid 1990s when as a Senior UR, he was introduced to and became a permanent fan of the music of, salsa band, Bio Ritmo. Jones studied traditional West African dance with Sister Faye Walker and Judy Lynn Edwards. He discovered a passion for flamenco through teachers like with Ana Ines King, Anna Menendez and Antonio Hidalgo Paz as well as many other master flamenco teachers during his travels to New York, Washington DC, Jerez de la Frontera, Madrid and Seville. He has studied Afro-Cuban dances with Ifé Michelle Milligan, Alberto Limonta Perez and various other master teachers in workshops between Miami, New York and Barcelona. He has studied salsa and partner dancing with various artists including Edwin Roa, Steve Greene and Yamil Boo. In 2006 & 2007 he delved into community engagement through the arts with Urban Bush Women as a participant in their Summer Leadership Institute in Brooklyn, NY. In 2015, he performed with his Bomba Afro-Puerto Rican dance teacher, Isha Renta, as an invited guest artist with her group, Semilla Cultural, at the Kennedy Center’s Millennium Stage. He currently serves as a member of the board of directors for Dogtown Dance Theatre where he also creates and presents concert dance performances and productions.

<text>This article from The Richmond Collegian announces the University Carnival, which was to take place in the Millhiser gymnasium at 7:30 PM. The announcement notes that 800 students attended the Carnival in the previous year, and that, as in 1939, the proceeds from the 1940 Carnival would go to "the alumni fund for the proposed student center building." Different booths would give out prizes, and many campus organizations would perform, including all 11 fraternities, the student governments of Richmond College and Westhampton College, and other campus organizations. The University Players presented "The Evolution of Necking." Accompanying this article is a series of photos from the 1939 Carnival, featuring students dressed as Native Americans as well as students in blackface. </text>
