An account of the resource
Despite being named No. 3 school in the nation for “best quality of life” in the Princeton Review, minority students at the University of Richmond disagree. Only 12% of the university’s undergraduates identify as African-American, Native American, Hispanic/Latino, Asian or biracial. From the black community on campus, “approximately 40%... receive the University’s CIGNA Scholarship." Many student statements appear in the article that voice veiled frustration with the university’s lack of diversity, which is followed by an example in which a student transfers to a different institution. The lack of support from the university for minority students is glossed over by the university’s statement that "...students express negative feelings their first year because of the tremendous amount of growing they go through.” Although there are many obstacles in the way of students of color, organizations such as the Multicultural Student Union (MSU), International Student Union, Umoja Gospel Choir, Ngoma African Company and many other multicultural groups provide safe spaces for those in need.

This September 7, 1971, letter is from Dr. Edward F. Overton, Dean of the Summer School at the University of Richmond, to Dr. Robert F. Smart, Provost of the University. Dr. Overton provides the amount of minority students in the University College and Main Campus from their Summer School Records. The letter states there were 13 "Negroes", 1 American Indian, 2 Spanish-Americans, 6 "Oriental-Americans" and 10 non U.S. citizens. These totals bring the number of non-white students attending the University of Richmond's Summer School to 32.
