An account of the resource
As University of Richmond students watched the televised Black Action Movement at the University of Massachusetts, discussions and debates followed regarding instances of racism happening on campus. Sociology professors Henry Stewart and Willie Dell, alongside Westhampton College students, Richmond College students, and members of the Minority Student Union (MSU) all gathered in the Gottwald Science Center auditorium to kickstart a special report titled ‘Racism 101’. This panel created a space in which individuals shared personal opinions and experiences about integration, racism, and racial climates within the academic institution. Many different perspectives on racial issues were brought to light as one student claimed that, “everyone wants to interact,” while another stated that, “not everyone wants to integrate.” This organized program inspired students to challenge the inherent systemic racism found at the University.
