Crooks takes an infuriated tone as he condemns the language that is used by Whitney. As a black student on campus, Whitney wrote pieces talking about his negative experiences living at the University of Richmond, with writings that gradually become bolder. Crooks claims that Whitney believes in philosophy equal to that of Hitler, Hegel, and Karl Marx. Ollie Edmunds, a leader in higher education, gave the commencement address, "Checks and Balances" for the Class of 1970. He began his speech by claiming that in the past year and a half, there had been some attacks on the United States Constitution. He compared the democracy of the United States to those of Athens, East Berlin, and Madrid. However, he explained that Athens had transitioned to being a military state. Furthermore, someone Dr. Edmunds met at the University of Athens explained that this happened because college students began complaining and protesting, creating chaos. Dr. Edmunds recounted his visit to East Berlin and asked his guide if Humboldt University ever had student protests, and the guide answered, "You mean like Kent State! No. Soldiers never come on this campus and shoot down students." On May 4, 1970, students at Kent State University were protesting the Vietnam War and the Ohio National Guard killed four students and injured nine students in an effort to suppress this resistance. Having discussed communism in certain European states, he began to close his speech by repeating a question that a Swiss banker asked him, "Will America survive?" and Edmunds went on to ask, "Can democracy still work?" He believed that the violence and riots perpetrated by both right and left extremists would result in an even more repressive government. He also called the graduates to form a "Young People's Lobby" as a productive means for community engagement because every other group including, "the female of our species-God bless them- have their lobby." He spoke disparagingly about the protests occurring around the nation in response to the Vietnam War by referring to them as "silly." Hamilton, the City Editor of the Richmond News Leader. This letter was sent in response to Hamilton’s letter requesting a statement regarding political activities at the university in light of the concern surrounding communism in the United States. Modlin’s response was sent past the June 28 deadline Hamilton gave him. Modlin wrote that faculty members were not required to give a "loyalty statement" and the university does not ask about the faculty or prospective faculty’s political beliefs. The university had not dismissed any faculty members based on political affiliation, but "an avowed member of the Communist party would not be permitted on the faculty as he would not be free to seek and teach the truth." In addition, textbooks were chosen by professors and none had been rejected based on "undesirable political or economic material." The students were also encouraged to participate in political activities "in preparation for active citizenship." Strother wrote that when "we business men" meet, they hear about the importance of voting and "the gravity of the trend toward socialism and the danger of losing our free enterprise system." Elections for the top State officials were approaching and they would "govern our affairs and determine to a great extent the policies under which we must operate our businesses." He emphasized the importance of voting and the danger of a "growing political philosophy" that "carry out their selfish purposes." Strother asked Modlin to draw a red circle around May 7 on his calendar because it is "the deadline for payment of poll taxes in order to vote in the coming elections" and encouraged Modlin to ask his friends and employees to do the same.
