The report states that “Separate dining opportunities shall be provided in each college.” However, Dr. William H. Leftwich, vice president of student affairs, says that only students with schedule conflicts that prevent them from returning to their designated college should be able to eat on opposite sides of the lake. While Leftwich is anxious to hear the recommendations from the Food Service Committee, he has received a recommendation from the Westhampton Student Affairs Committee to reserve Westhampton College’s Main Dining Hall for women students at dinner. Leftwich adds that if they were to announce that students could eat at either location at any time, he and Saga, Inc. (the food service company) would “experience complete chaos."</text>

Common Ground director Glyn Hughes explains that Greek life on campus is heteronormative, meaning that it assumes everyone in the community is heterosexual. Although Greek leaders disagree that fraternities and sororities add to the homophobic atmosphere of University of Richmond’s campus, gay 2008 graduate Jason Tseng, along with other LGBTQ+ students, claim that the University is a, “…hostile climate for queer people.” This hostility can be attributed in part to gender segregated housing and the coordinate college system in general, says Tseng. Despite administrative efforts to promote campus inclusivity by Strategic Plan, Hughs notes that change in campus culture must come from students as well. In terms of promoting LGBTQ+ visibility on campus, Andy Gurka, area coordinator for the University Forest Apartments, discusses his experience as gay on campus and concludes that “being out has been a benefit to the community."</text>

He says that fraternity events on campus alleviate the social pressures around dating, yet students still remain apathetic. With the opening of the E. Bruce Heilman Dining Center, Franco hoped that this lack of socialization would disappear; however, the situation did not significantly improve. He concludes with a call to end student apathy and to work toward mending the University’s various problems.</text>

Ron Inlow, director of Food and Auxiliary Services, says that the centralized dining hall would yield lower operating cost than two, and could result in a unified food service. The committee is expected to meet again on April 16, and a final decision will be reached sometime in May.</text>

<text>According to this <em>University of Richmond Collegian</em> article, the Board of Trustees has passed a Westhampton Senate proposal allowing men to eat at the court dining hall during dinner hours. The court dining hall was the all-female dining hall intended for Westhampton College students. The proposal, explained by Amanda Debusk, resulted partly from a student survey which found 237 students wanted a change and only 38 preferred the present condition. Additionally, the Senate report states that the concept of “separate dining facilities” as stated in the Coordinate Education Report has not been realized because the court dining hall, designated for women, is available on a limited basis only. This has resulted in the loss of a “sense of college” by some students. Many students also believe Richmond College is “in violation of the present system as interpreted by University officials,” since the amendment states that the enforcement of this rule at only one college is “not generally accepted by Westhampton students.”</text>

<text>This article criticizes the continuing separation between Richmond College and Westhampton College, arguing that the division makes UR operate "as a summer camp environment with a lake in the middle," and that it was time that "steps were taken to turn UR into a truly co-ed university." It mentions specifically disputes between the colleges over which facilities they were to use. WC students wanted to use the Robins Center locker room facilities, and RC students wanted to use the WC tennis courts, leading to conflict resulting from a "lack of communication."</text>

While many professors expressed excitement for Richmond College's writing to be celebrated again in a publication, dramatics professor Alton Williams claimed he would rather see a collaborative, University-wide <em>Messenger</em> than two Messengers, one for Westhampton and one for Richmond. Westhampton was still publishing its own <em>Messenger</em> at the time.
