<text>This article seeks to raise awareness for the concerning lack of student activism at the University of Richmond during a time when “student activism seems to be on the rise on some campuses throughout the nation.” Richard A. Mateer, Dean of Richmond College, believes that this apparent apathy could be the result of many students at the University being from politically conservative families who may be uncomfortable with activism. Students disagree, however, insisting that the lack of student concern for political or moral issues stems from the lack of actual diversity on campus. To emphasize this lack of concern that students exhibit, staff writer Kent Bernhard cites the University of Virginia’s student-led construction of a shantytown on campus in response to Apartheid in South Africa. Bernhard writes that, “The debate about Apartheid has gone largely unnoticed at the University.” In response to this issue, Mateer suggests that instead of encouraging small groups of students who organize activist events, the whole university should invest in a single topic of concern and integrate it into classes and public discussion.</text>

Originally, sororities were discouraged because the university was thought to be too small to sustain such organizations. <text>In this article, guest writer Kendra Corey recounts the history of integration at the University of Richmond in the late 1960s after the Supreme Court decision in <em>Brown v. Board of Education</em>, as well as detailing some of the experiences and sentiments of the first black students to attend the University and live on campus. Compared to other universities in the United States and in the South particularly, the University of Richmond is considered by this writer to be late in its integration process. In an interview in April of 1999, Richmond College Dean Richard Mateer asserts that there were no riots or violent outbreaks in response to integration like on other college campuses. However, Corey remarks that at the time of integration and the arrival of black students such as Barry Greene, who is notably the first black student to live on campus, there were no black student organizations or black fraternities at the University of Richmond. In 1971, the University newspaper <em>The Collegian</em> writes that, “Each black interviewed indicated that his first year in Richmond was one of the hardest in his life”. According to Corey, the black student population (mostly the amount of black male athletes) increased greatly with the initiation of the CIGNA scholar program.</text>

Grigg writes this memo after the joint meeting at University Center designed to facilitate a new cooperative program between Randolph Macon, Virginia Union, Virginia Commonwealth University, and the University of Richmond. This proposal was designed to work within <a href="https://www.gao.gov/products/127541" target="_blank">Title III of the Higher Education Act of 1965</a>. Dean Grigg discusses the necessary inclusion of the university Librarians prior to any cooperative library projects conception. The benefits of such cooperation could be significant, particularly through the sharing of certain high tech, and high cost, materials like an IBM computer for example. Grigg asserts that this could be a very good program for the University of Richmond to be a part of, and reminds President Modlin of the October 1st deadline all schools were requested to decide by.</text>

A freshman in Lora Robins Court described receiving a regular phone call after arriving home from her classes. Assistant Westhampton Dean Mary Crotty also describes other unsettling incidents of phone harassment experienced by Westhampton students. Campus Police Chief Robert Dillard notes that some of the calls come from the greater Richmond area. Dillard describes an arrest of a Richmond man who "was terrorizing" UR and VCU students, making thousands of calls. Dillard did not believe that the calls posed a physical threat to the college students, but urged students to never give away their identities. The article closes with tips on how to handle obscene phone calls.</text>

<text>This article talks about pressure from the federal government to integrate the University of Richmond by getting more black students, faculty, and staff. The university spokesman said that the President, Dean of Education, and the Provost were not available to make any comment or take any action on the matter. The federal government threatened to cut federal funding to the university if they failed to integrate. Federal funding contributed one million dollars to build a dormitory on campus during the one year the university signed up for federal funding. Prior to that year, the board of trustees blocked the university from applying for federal funding. The federal proposal involves a part time exchange program for "negro" students and faculty from the Virginia Union University. A similar exchange of faculty was examined between Virginia Union and the all-white Methodist Randolph Macon College. No comment was received from Virginia Union officials on the issue. Student teachers were going to be pushed into the Richmond public school system. Placements into the school will be done after considering the wishes of the student, faculty, and the university. A current federal study showed that there were only 2 black students out of 2587 students.</text>

<text>This article talks about how the President of Virginia Union University (VUU), Thomas H. Henderson, was on board with the idea of having a faculty exchange with the University of Richmond. President of the University of Richmond, George Modlin, had no comment on the possible exchange or a recent federal notification ordering the university to integrate in order to receive further federal funding. Both the universities are Baptist affiliated. VUU, a historically black university (HBCU), had dozens of white students and faculty while UR, a predominantly white and segregated school, had only two black students. VUU was currently carrying out a similar exchange program with the the all-white Methodist Randolph Macon College which only had one or two black students and no black faculty. The government suggested that UR should also send some of its student teachers to practice in black schools in the Richmond Public School system. This talk of desegregation resurfaced the hesistance shown by University official during accepting federal funding. The federal government threatened to pull out the federal funding to the school if UR failed to integrate. UR only recently received its federal funding of one million for dormitory construction after long discussion and consultation with the major Baptist bodies associated with the university.</text>
