This plan lays out the guidelines for the Graduate and Professional Schools to transition into compliance with <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rehabilitation_Act_of_1973#Section_504" target="_blank">Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973</a> which was aimed at eliminating discrimination of people with disabilities from programs and institutions receiving federal funding. This document evaluates the situation regarding accessibility to disabled individuals at the university. The committee for the this evaluation was chaired by Dr. William Leftwich, Vice President for Student Affairs. There were other members from the university involved in this evaluation. This included Dr. D. Robert Moxley, William Rhodes, Ronald Hicks, Dr. William Woolcott (noted as a disabled individual in the report), Walter Van Klein, Mary Thoephanos (noted as a student who uses a wheelchair in the report), Michael Decker, and Eva S. Tashjian-Brown. After the evaluation a plan was drafted for the transition and the plan was to be fully implemented by June, 1980. Dr. Leftwich was mainly in charge of enforcing the plan and overseeing the execution of the plan from different departments and programs. Physical and structural changes were to be made to almost every building on campus to make it more accessible. In addition, redesigning equipment, reassigning classes to accessible buildings, providing aid to students with disabilities and rescheduling classes/activities was being considered as alternatives. The recruitment and admissions process would be made more accessible and a statement of non-discrimination would be included in every step of the admissions process. Changes would be made to make sure that disabled individuals can excel academically with policies which would provide longer attending periods for qualified individuals with disabilities. Campus facilities like Financial Assistance, Physical Education and Athletics, Counseling and Placement services and Social Organizations will be enforcing a non-discrimination policy and have equal opportunity for disabled individuals. The Committee suggested that a more specific contingency plan be designed for specific situations and the faculty and staff be reminded of the new law to prevent discrimination. The document expresses the promise of compliance to the legislation several times for reassurance. Description An account of the resource In this oral history interview, retired professor of accounting Raymond Slaughter (‘77-‘18) sat down with Cole Richard (’21) and Jenifer Yi (’22) on June 10, 2019, in Boatwright Memorial Library. Over the course of the one hour interview, Slaughter discussed his experience as the first black professor in the business school and one of the few black professors university-wide, including his educational background at Historically Black Colleges and Universities prior to coming to Richmond, the hiring and tenure processes, and his service-focused academic career. Slaughter also reflected on institutional changes he would like to see in order to reduce discrimination and promote diversity in faculty. <img src="https://memory.richmond.edu/files/misc/SlaughterRaymond_1980.jpg" alt="" /> Raymond Slaughter was born in 1945 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He graduated from Kentucky State University in 1967, and attended Howard University Law School and obtained his law degree in 1970. In 1971, he received his MBA in Business Administration from the University of Pennsylvania. He worked for public accounting firm Ernst & Ernst in Detroit Michigan, and then began teaching at Bucknell University. In 1977, he moved to Richmond and began teaching in the accounting department of the Robins School of Business, where he taught for 41 years before his retirement in 2018. Description An account of the resource In this oral history interview, professor of accounting Dr. Darrell Walden sat down with Marissa Brown ('19) on March 25, 2019, in Walden's office in the Robins School of Business. Over the course of the one hour interview, Walden spoke about being born and raised in Richmond during school desegregation, his family and their business, attending Virginia Union University for undergraduate studies--including studying under the first Black woman to become a CPA in Virginia, Dr. Ruth Harris, transitioning to Syracuse University for his graduate education, working in Fortune 500 companies, transitioning to teaching, getting his PhD at Virginia Commonwealth University, and coming to teach at the University of Richmond 25 years ago. On his time at UR, Dr. Walden shares his experience as one of two Black faculty members in the Robins School of Business, the struggles of the tenure process, being chair of the accounting department for 12 years, and reflects on his hopes for the university moving forward. <img src="https://memory.richmond.edu/files/misc/WaldenDarrell_2004.JPG" alt="" /> Dr. W. Darrell Walden was born and raised in Richmond, VA where he currently lives. He is the father of two adult daughters and has four grandchildren. Dr. Walden worked his way through college and earned his B.S. in Accounting with honors from Virginia Union University (VUU). At VUU, Dr. Ruth C. Harris, the first Black woman CPA in Virginia, was his teacher and mentor. One year after graduating from VUU he earned his M.S. in Accounting from Syracuse University as an IBM student fellow. His mother, Theresa C. Walden, was the chief accountant at VUU. His uncle, Robert W. Coles, Jr., was one of the first 100 Black CPAs in the United States. Prior to his academic career, his professional career experience has included work in the Controllers’ staff and corporate tax departments of two Fortune 500 companies. Dr. Walden is a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) licensed in Virginia, and consults with a number of firms in the central Virginia area.  Dr. Walden earned his Ph.D. in Business with honors from Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) where he majored in Accounting, and minored in Finance and Information Systems. Dr. Walden was among only 24 Blacks out of 1206 Ph.D.s in Business earned in 1994 (Blacks earned only 2% of these degrees in the 1990s). He is a charter member of the PhD Project—Accounting Doctoral Association. He belongs to Beta Gamma Sigma, national honor society. Dr. Walden is currently Department Chair and a tenured Associate Professor of Accounting in the Robins School of Business at the University of Richmond (UR). While Department Chair over the last 12 years, he has help elevate the AACSB accredited accounting program to national prominence including high CPA exam pass rates. He also teaches at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. While at UR, he has been awarded the University’s Faculty Story Award given to faculty who model community-building relations and world-changing service. He has also been awarded the University’s Excellence in Teaching, Learning and Technology Award. The VCU African American Alumni Council named Dr. Walden “2007 Alumnus of the Year” for his “Black History in the Making” efforts. Prior to his tenure at UR, he taught at three other universities including the prestigious Marriott School of Management at Brigham Young University in Provo UT. Description An account of the resource In this hour long oral history, alumnus Darnell “DJ” Morris (B’75) sat down and shared his story with Jenifer Yi (’22) and Johnnette Johnson (’20) at the University of Richmond’s Boatwright Memorial Library on June 28th, 2019. Darnell “DJ” Morris was one of the first black students to be admitted into the University’s School of Business. Morris recalls his educational journey starting with the integration of schools in the 70s, beginning college at Ferrum College, to his campus involvement and success in the Robins School of Business after transferring to the University of Richmond at the beginning of his junior year. Morris (DJ) was born and raised in Esmont, Virginia (rural area of Southern Albemarle County). Grigg, Dean of Richmond College. The memo is addressed to President George Modlin and CC’s Provost Smart. Grigg writes this memo after the joint meeting at University Center designed to facilitate a new cooperative program between Randolph Macon, Virginia Union, Virginia Commonwealth University, and the University of Richmond. This proposal was designed to work within <a href="https://www.gao.gov/products/127541" target="_blank">Title III of the Higher Education Act of 1965</a>. Dean Grigg discusses the necessary inclusion of the university Librarians prior to any cooperative library projects conception. The benefits of such cooperation could be significant, particularly through the sharing of certain high tech, and high cost, materials like an IBM computer for example. Grigg asserts that this could be a very good program for the University of Richmond to be a part of, and reminds President Modlin of the October 1st deadline all schools were requested to decide by. Moncure, the Dean of University College, the downtown division of the University of Richmond. The letter is addressed to Dr. George M. Modlin, then President of the University of Richmond. Moncure writes that as per the last meeting of the deans, and President Modlin’s suggestion that there might be a way to develop a relationship between the University of Richmond and Virginia Union University, that there should be a committee established to investigate this opportunity. Moncure believes there could be several advantages and disadvantages to this possible union, and that a committee would be best able to summarize its findings for the administration. Moncure suggests several possible avenues of joint cooperation, including joint faculty appointments, exchange lectureships, cultural projects, and joint evening programs in some areas. After learning from Dean Gayles that Virginia Union plans to discontinue its evening program, Moncure even suggests the idea of allowing “Negro” professors from Virginia Union to teach single classes in the University of Richmond’s evening program. The letter ends by asking for President Modlin’s approval to move forward with this committee plan. Description An account of the resource In this letter, University of Richmond Secretary-Treasurer Charles H. Wheeler III addresses University President George M. Modlin on the topic of actions taken by Marian H. Hamilton, the Westhampton College Dean of Students. Wheeler states that Hamilton overstepped her bounds by calling a meeting with the Westhampton dining hall’s waitresses and distributing instruction sheets (a copy of which is attached to this letter). Wheeler explains that Hamilton’s meeting has caused “considerable resentment”, and he requests the immediate withdrawal of these distributed instructions. Additionally, Wheeler says Hamilton told the waitresses that students were allowed to smoke at at least one meal a day; however, the dining hall is not equipped for cigarette waste.
