Originally, sororities were discouraged because the university was thought to be too small to sustain such organizations. <text>This article talks about how the President of Virginia Union University (VUU), Thomas H. Henderson, was on board with the idea of having a faculty exchange with the University of Richmond. President of the University of Richmond, George Modlin, had no comment on the possible exchange or a recent federal notification ordering the university to integrate in order to receive further federal funding. Both the universities are Baptist affiliated. VUU, a historically black university (HBCU), had dozens of white students and faculty while UR, a predominantly white and segregated school, had only two black students. VUU was currently carrying out a similar exchange program with the the all-white Methodist Randolph Macon College which only had one or two black students and no black faculty. The government suggested that UR should also send some of its student teachers to practice in black schools in the Richmond Public School system. This talk of desegregation resurfaced the hesistance shown by University official during accepting federal funding. The federal government threatened to pull out the federal funding to the school if UR failed to integrate. UR only recently received its federal funding of one million for dormitory construction after long discussion and consultation with the major Baptist bodies associated with the university.</text>

Federal funding contributed one million dollars to build a dormitory on campus during the one year the university signed up for federal funding. Prior to that year, the board of trustees blocked the university from applying for federal funding. The federal proposal involves a part time exchange program for "negro" students and faculty from the Virginia Union University. A similar exchange of faculty was examined between Virginia Union and the all-white Methodist Randolph Macon College. No comment was received from Virginia Union officials on the issue. Student teachers were going to be pushed into the Richmond public school system. Placements into the school will be done after considering the wishes of the student, faculty, and the university. A current federal study showed that there were only 2 black students out of 2587 students.</text>

He commented that a small amount of the current black students enrolled on campus that year were not a result of the efforts to recruit during the Black Student Day, held the previous spring, but no specific recruiting efforts were mentioned. Several black students complained that there was “no social life” for black students. Stanley Davis, a black sophomore of Richmond College, said that he had contacted students before going to UR and and that he would like to see more qualified black women admitted to Westhampton College. Belinda Carr, Westhampton’s first black American student said that she got to know the school through two black athletes who had visited the campus and through the National Negro Scholarship Fund. Norman Williams, a black sophomore member of the track team said he chose Richmond to get a “really good standing in life”. Beverly Robinson, a black Westhampton freshman complained of the lack of black students. Miss Anderson, the Director of Admissions of Westhampton College could not be reached for comments at the time.</text>

<text>This article describes harassment experienced by residents of Westhampton College dorms and the University Forest Apartments. Campus Police Chief Robert C. Dillard reported that residents received approximately 25 complaints of obscene phone calls since Christmas break. Dillard described the caller as a "white male with a Southern accent" who was not only obscene but also threatening. The article quotes South Court residents, who received phone calls "every other day for about three weeks." The students called the Campus Police as well their parents, who reported the issue to the dean. Police Officer Kim T. Bowles was assigned to the case, and determined that there was no way that the man in question could be watching the female students. The newspaper reports that "the other caller is a black male who uses vulgar, straight obscenity." Police officers encouraged students to hang up on the callers, and rented an answering machine to record the caller's voice, but the caller did not leave a message.</text>

The dean of students, alongside many other organization leaders, believes that The University of Richmond is an institution that is too small in size to play host to greek organizations. Student government president, Nancy McCulloch, and sophomore class president, Jane Pitts, both relay their beliefs on sororities at the university. They believe that, “it is better to have a common spirit and unity than a division,” in addition to the lack of time that girls would have because of other organizations that are already present at the school. <text>This article describes obscene phone calls and harassment experienced by Westhampton College students. Students describe the calls as frightening and scary. A freshman in Lora Robins Court described receiving a regular phone call after arriving home from her classes. Assistant Westhampton Dean Mary Crotty also describes other unsettling incidents of phone harassment experienced by Westhampton students. Campus Police Chief Robert Dillard notes that some of the calls come from the greater Richmond area. Dillard describes an arrest of a Richmond man who "was terrorizing" UR and VCU students, making thousands of calls. Dillard did not believe that the calls posed a physical threat to the college students, but urged students to never give away their identities. The article closes with tips on how to handle obscene phone calls.</text>
