The focus was on diversity, and the main goal of the symposium was to "educate people on what leadership is" and "Can leadership be confused with power?" Panelists, who were led by Paul W. Duke, moderator of the television program "Washington Week in Review," also discussed how politics were extremely important to leadership from how voters can be more influential to what takes place in the polls. Alice Hettrick, a Jepson junior, stated that students are interested in the "long-term" issues and wish to find "long-term" solutions to those problems. The curriculum of the leadership program is to look at leadership from a diverse, broad lense to make tomorrow a better future.</text>

Morrill that intends to address “the problem of the minority experience” on campus. The article begins with a description of a racist incident against a Black female student which occurred in a University class just three years prior to the publication of this article. The commission will not only address the racism Black students experience in the classroom, but also how students treat University employees in the dormitories and dining hall, who are largely people of color. At the time of this article, there were 84 Black students, 40 non-Black students of color, and 15 international students in an undergraduate class of 2,700, with less than 10 Black faculty members. The University’s plan is to “double the number of minority and international students currently enrolled within five years and there will also be a concerted effort to increase black faculty.” Curriculum changes such as adding African literature, Black American literature and a multicultural course along with teaching the Western Civilization history course are also in the works. Pam Johnson, a member of the Multicultural Student Union (MSU) and president of Women Involved in Living and Learning (WILL), said Black fraternities and sororities would help convince Black students to attend the University of Richmond. Dean of faculty David Leary adds that Americans in general need to understand that the reason for bring minority students to predominantly white institutions is to give them an opportunity.</text>

<text>This article seeks to raise awareness for the concerning lack of student activism at the University of Richmond during a time when “student activism seems to be on the rise on some campuses throughout the nation.” Richard A. Mateer, Dean of Richmond College, believes that this apparent apathy could be the result of many students at the University being from politically conservative families who may be uncomfortable with activism. Students disagree, however, insisting that the lack of student concern for political or moral issues stems from the lack of actual diversity on campus. To emphasize this lack of concern that students exhibit, staff writer Kent Bernhard cites the University of Virginia’s student-led construction of a shantytown on campus in response to Apartheid in South Africa. Bernhard writes that, “The debate about Apartheid has gone largely unnoticed at the University.” In response to this issue, Mateer suggests that instead of encouraging small groups of students who organize activist events, the whole university should invest in a single topic of concern and integrate it into classes and public discussion.</text>

Associate director of admissions Steve Wilborn spoke of the University's "growth" in minority groups, and the need for understanding. Teo Ngatuvai, a senior from Hawaii talked about how students must be outgoing, and Japanese student Wakana Tanaka talked about the culture differences between Japan and America, referencing times she had been inappropriately stereotyped. Freshman Tracy McPate of the Lambda Coalition, an LGBT support organization, talked about how discrimination could be even more rampant on a college campus, and junior Katina Jones discussed how she learned to overcome her own prejudices.</text>

This article talks about that remarks and about Ricks, who went on to say that "it's horrendous for a university of this caliber to have such a lack of diversity." Kendall, the writer, goes on to say that "it gives a false impression of the real world" and draws more attention to the apathy of the student body and a seeming unwillingness to go above and beyond. The author says that to make things better, students must send a clear message that "this is a campus that welcomes diversity," and that Richmond had a chance to prepare for diversity before it arrives that Stanford didn't have.</text>
