Description An account of the resource In this oral history interview, retired professor of accounting Raymond Slaughter (‘77-‘18) sat down with Cole Richard (’21) and Jenifer Yi (’22) on June 10, 2019, in Boatwright Memorial Library. Over the course of the one hour interview, Slaughter discussed his experience as the first black professor in the business school and one of the few black professors university-wide, including his educational background at Historically Black Colleges and Universities prior to coming to Richmond, the hiring and tenure processes, and his service-focused academic career. Slaughter also reflected on institutional changes he would like to see in order to reduce discrimination and promote diversity in faculty. <img src="https://memory.richmond.edu/files/misc/SlaughterRaymond_1980.jpg" alt="" /> Raymond Slaughter was born in 1945 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He graduated from Kentucky State University in 1967, and attended Howard University Law School and obtained his law degree in 1970. In 1971, he received his MBA in Business Administration from the University of Pennsylvania. He worked for public accounting firm Ernst & Ernst in Detroit Michigan, and then began teaching at Bucknell University. In 1977, he moved to Richmond and began teaching in the accounting department of the Robins School of Business, where he taught for 41 years before his retirement in 2018. Description An account of the resource The chartering of the first Historically Black Sorority at the University of Richmond is garnering attention as eight Westhampton College students diligently work to uphold the name of Delta Sigma Theta. This nationally recognized sorority was established on campus because minority women felt that they needed a space in Greek Life in which “membership is open to all races.” Initially chartered at Howard University, Delta Sigma Theta drew attention with the Five Point Program; educational development, economic development, physical and mental health, and political and international awareness and involvement. The writers inform that the Office for Civil RIghts of the Department of Health, Education and Welfare (HEW) is investigating institutions for which the office has received complaints of Title IX violation. Accordingly, University of Akron, University of Bridgeport, Cornell University, Howard University, University of Kansas, University of Michigan, Oklahoma State University and Washington State University were eight among the 80 institutions that have complaints pending, a statistic that did not include those colleges and universities against which complaints had recently been filed. Moreover, the memo states the process that the institutions must undertake if they are subject to a Title IX compliance review by the Office of Civil Rights. This process involves a data request by the office, which shall be responded to and analyzed by the office, followed with on-site investigations and interviews at the college or university and post-on-site analysis of data collected. The letter specifies that failure to demonstrate compliance with Title IX would result in a "termination of federal financial assistance" received by the institution.
