In her time as a student, Gill was on the 1928 Sophomore Women play committee, the 1929 vice president of the Debaters club, and the Assistant Editor of the 1929 Messenger. Gill was also author of the story "Tea-Shop Reminiscences", which discusses the traditional Chinese Tea-Room. This article announced both the May Queen court celebration and the Indian Pageant that was to follow. The subtitles of this article state "Make plans for Participation in Indian Pageant at Yorktown", "Present Pocahontas", and "May Day Indian Prologue in the wooden dell to be Followed by Main Event in Greek Theater", inviting students to participate in an afternoon of fun by visiting a replica of Indian culture. It was written by student Romney Smith who criticized a U.S. Court ruling that allowed the NFL team, The Washington Redskins, to keep its name, despite allegations that it was racist. Smith, who is part Native American herself, argues that a sports team would never be allowed to use racial slurs such as "honkey," "chink," or "nigger," as its name, thus it was problematic that the Washington team was allowed to keep theirs. She argues that the naming of the team allows people to remain ignorant of its offensive nature, "People will not recognize the word 'redskin' as offensive, because after all, if the NFL allows a team to be named that, it mustn't be that bad." The reviewer Heath Haworth asserts the play is more of a “didactic, preachy documentary” rather than a drama, and that “the fault was not with the production so much as the play itself.” The play tells the story of the 200 year struggle between the Native Americans and the white men and “the belief of English tyrants that the destiny of Europe was to dominate this new continent and remove all savages to ‘purify’ it.” Haworth states that the events and information in the play are not “new to most informed people,” but the play provided “gruesome reminders of our treatment of these first Americans” and the “continuous saga of broken promises” between the Native Americans and the white men. The play portrays the scalping of a Native American child as well as the death march of 10,000 Cherokees across the Mississippi River. The play ranges from “pointing a sober, accusing finger” at the “misdeeds” of the white man to using “humor to show up the idiocy of the white man in his dealings with the red race.” The play also portrays the attempt to convert the Native Americans to Christianity.
