The student also addresses potential concerns brought up by others, such as the role of the federal government in its ROTC and academic program. Two years later, she attended Thomas Jefferson High School, continuing the push to desegregate schools in the city. Madieth developed many friendships and many interests while attending TJ, and when Westhampton College was presented as a possible choice, she found it to be a good fit. Several of her high school friends were attending, and it was a convenient commute from home. The goal at Westhampton was to get the best liberal arts education possible. While there, she pursued a wide variety of interests, but was most involved with the theater department. In 1972, she graduated with a degree in Speech and Theater Arts. After graduation, Madieth worked as a teacher for Richmond Public Schools. It was the perfect job, because she could travel during the summer and be involved with theater – performing in community and dinner theaters, summer theater at Dogwood Dell, TV commercials, industrial films, and as a film extra. She also worked several years as a per diem reading consultant for SRA-McGraw-Hill. Today, Madieth spends her retirement doing whatever she wants and enjoying every minute of it.

Isabelle LeSane was born and raised in Richmond, VA and educated in the Richmond Public School System. She had no experience with interracial schooling until she came to Westhampton. But she was raised in a family of entrepreneurs and that gave her plenty of practice in dealing with many nationalities. Like her father, Isabelle never met a stranger, so enrolling in an all white school was not a challenge for her.

At the University of Richmond, Isabelle majored in Russian with the intention of becoming an interpreter at the UN. But life intervened and she got married and had children instead and didn’t want to leave Richmond. Because she had earned a teacher’s certificate while at the university, Isabelle applied for and was hired by RPS. Although she was hired as a German teacher, she was given the opportunity to teach Russian once it was known that she had that expertise. Isabelle is now retired and spends her days doing fun things with her grandkids and with friends who are in the same boat-being intentionally lazy and unapologetic!

Before the vote, there was a debate that about how to fix enrollment to “give all races a fair chance.” While the affirmative side of the debate claimed that Black people would not want to apply to the school because of its all-white Southern image, the negative side claimed that if the school “lowered its admission standards,” then students would not want to apply in the future. Professors and students both gave their opinions during this forum. Dr. Robert S. Alley of the religion department spoke on the affirmative side. Student Gaston Williams was also on the affirmative side, and Debbie Jennings on the negative. Dr. J. Martin Ryle of the history department also made a remark, and claimed the unviersity was "riding on waves, doing very little to change their past image of discrimination."</text>

On May 4, 1970, Ohio National Guard members shot at unarmed college students during a protest against the bombings in Cambodia by the United States military ordered by President Richard Nixon. Four students died. Many students called for a strike as a response to both of these crises. While some faculty believed that prayer would be helpful for the students, others believed that reason and debate would be helpful. Many professors expressed their preference of more “peaceful” tactics as opposed to “senseless violence” in response to these events. Speakers at the rally included Dr. Martin Ryle, freshman Sandy Lorber, Dr. William Smith, Dr. James Hall, Dr. Robert Alley, and RC student government president Woody Traylor.</text>

<text>In this letter, University of Richmond President George Modlin wrote to Virginia Governor Lindwood Holton on October 8, 1970. Modlin wrote as a follow up to a telephone conversation the two had had earlier in the week in regards to the relationship between the university and the Department of Health, Education, and Welfare (HEW) Office of Civil Rights. Modlin shared all the correspondence the university had shared with HEW. Modlin stated that the "University has cooperated in good faith and has complied with all recommendations of that Office until the receipt of the recent letter which became public a few days ago." On October 5, 1970, the Richmond Times-Dispatch had published an article in regards to a letter from Dr. Eloise Severinson, Regional Director for HEW's Office of Civil Rights (available here). On October 7, 1970, President Modlin wrote to Dr. Severinson about the issues he believed the publication of this letter would cause the university (available here).

Modlin concludes this correspondence to the governor by stating: "The degree of interference by the Office for Civil Rights into the academic and administrative affairs of our Virginia instituions of higher education, both public and private, is greatly disturbing." Dr. Severinson's original communication included suggestions for how the University of Richmond could better comply with the Civil Rights Act of 1964.</text>

<text>This article addresses the threat posed to the further existence of the Reserve Officers' Training Corps (ROTC) at the University of Richmond due to the university's non-compliance with integration. As the top of the article, the Collegian editor includes the following information: "Last week a special seven page directive, requiring all ROTC schools to integrate their military programs by 1965, was released by the Secretary of the Army Stephen Ailes. Since this executive order applies to all schools, the University is now faced with the question of how valuable is its Reserve Officers Traning Corp program. The matter of integration must be decided by the Board of Trustees of the University. The Board of Trustees will meet next in June. The question may be brought up then." Collegian writer Edwards goes on to explain that the "over-all opinion of University students...is that the school should continue its present program and integrate the school." Students quoted in the article include Dick Peterson, Richard Paulette, Jim Clark, Richard Sinclair, Bruce Bryan, and Ronnie May. The students quoted supported the continuation of the ROTC even if it meant integration. Richard Sinclair is noted as saying he "felt the Negroes are just as qualified to participate in the program as the white students." Several students noted their discomfort with integration being "forced" to integrate by the federal government. Bruce Bryan is quoted: "I don't think, however, that the government should interfere with a private institution."

Colonel Glenn L. Shivel of the ROTC department said that he had mixed emotions over the situation, that those in the department "hate to be used as a wedge or blackjack," and is quoted as saying that "education is marching on and the University of Richmond should keep abreast of the times." The article notes that the faculty committee met to study the developments, but that their recommendations would have little effect. The Virginia General Association of Baptists would meet in November, and they were the group that chose Board of Trustees members.

At the time, the only divison of the University of Richmond that had integrated courses was University College. After the publication of this article, the Board of Trustees met in June and approved an open admissions policy for the University of Richmond. No black students would be enrolled in classes outside of University College until the Fall of 1968.</text>
