Kincheloe, who expressed his concerns with the 1961 commencement speaker, Dr. Claudius Johnson's, remarks. Modlin assured Kincheloe that many people disagreed with the speaker, however there were some that agreed with him as well. Modlin went on to say that he did not expect Dr. Johnson to say as much as he did about a controversial topic. He claimed that the University cannot take total responsibility for the speaker as they can't know what people will say. However, he also said that that is in accordance with freedom of speech. Kincheloe had read a summary of the "off-color" speech in the Richmond Times-Dispatch and wasn't pleased with its tone, and neither were some other people with whom he spoke. Johnson. Dr. Johnson was a former professor of history and political science at Washington State University and an alum of the University of Richmond. In his commencement remarks, he discussed the abridgments of freedom taking place around the country for the sake of preserving national security. He went on to say that "many members of a non-Caucasian race" were scared to exercise their citizenly rights like voting or freely testifying in court. He believed that this fear was caused by both the government and private citizens. He ended his speech by offering three suggestions to the graduates: to use some ingenuity to avoid affirmative action, to preserve freedom and equality in America to protect its status as a world leader which "represents a propaganda victory...for our Iron Curtain rivals." Finally, he wanted the students to find their voices so that they could speak up and make the world a better place.
