Williams Law School graduate and chairman of the Business Law Committee of the Virginia Association. Hackney spoke at the "Focus '82" program, a conference "oriented towards women's and community interests" which was sponsored by the University of Richmond's Faculty Wives Club. Hackney was the president of the Richmond Women's Bar Association, and in the article describes the challenges of women who were not allowed to attend American Bar Association law schools until 1972. Hackney is quoted as saying that women "have a long way to go to establish their own place" in the world of law. Description An account of the resource In this oral history interview, professor of accounting Dr. Darrell Walden sat down with Marissa Brown ('19) on March 25, 2019, in Walden's office in the Robins School of Business. Over the course of the one hour interview, Walden spoke about being born and raised in Richmond during school desegregation, his family and their business, attending Virginia Union University for undergraduate studies--including studying under the first Black woman to become a CPA in Virginia, Dr. Ruth Harris, transitioning to Syracuse University for his graduate education, working in Fortune 500 companies, transitioning to teaching, getting his PhD at Virginia Commonwealth University, and coming to teach at the University of Richmond 25 years ago. On his time at UR, Dr. Walden shares his experience as one of two Black faculty members in the Robins School of Business, the struggles of the tenure process, being chair of the accounting department for 12 years, and reflects on his hopes for the university moving forward. <img src="https://memory.richmond.edu/files/misc/WaldenDarrell_2004.JPG" alt="" /> Dr. W. Darrell Walden was born and raised in Richmond, VA where he currently lives. He is the father of two adult daughters and has four grandchildren. Dr. Walden worked his way through college and earned his B.S. in Accounting with honors from Virginia Union University (VUU). At VUU, Dr. Ruth C. Harris, the first Black woman CPA in Virginia, was his teacher and mentor. One year after graduating from VUU he earned his M.S. in Accounting from Syracuse University as an IBM student fellow. His mother, Theresa C. Walden, was the chief accountant at VUU. His uncle, Robert W. Coles, Jr., was one of the first 100 Black CPAs in the United States. Prior to his academic career, his professional career experience has included work in the Controllers’ staff and corporate tax departments of two Fortune 500 companies. Dr. Walden is a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) licensed in Virginia, and consults with a number of firms in the central Virginia area.  Dr. Walden earned his Ph.D. in Business with honors from Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) where he majored in Accounting, and minored in Finance and Information Systems. Dr. Walden was among only 24 Blacks out of 1206 Ph.D.s in Business earned in 1994 (Blacks earned only 2% of these degrees in the 1990s). He is a charter member of the PhD Project—Accounting Doctoral Association. He belongs to Beta Gamma Sigma, national honor society. Dr. Walden is currently Department Chair and a tenured Associate Professor of Accounting in the Robins School of Business at the University of Richmond (UR). While Department Chair over the last 12 years, he has help elevate the AACSB accredited accounting program to national prominence including high CPA exam pass rates. He also teaches at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. While at UR, he has been awarded the University’s Faculty Story Award given to faculty who model community-building relations and world-changing service. He has also been awarded the University’s Excellence in Teaching, Learning and Technology Award. The VCU African American Alumni Council named Dr. Walden “2007 Alumnus of the Year” for his “Black History in the Making” efforts. Prior to his tenure at UR, he taught at three other universities including the prestigious Marriott School of Management at Brigham Young University in Provo UT. Description An account of the resource In this oral history interview, retired professor of accounting Raymond Slaughter (‘77-‘18) sat down with Cole Richard (’21) and Jenifer Yi (’22) on June 10, 2019, in Boatwright Memorial Library. Over the course of the one hour interview, Slaughter discussed his experience as the first black professor in the business school and one of the few black professors university-wide, including his educational background at Historically Black Colleges and Universities prior to coming to Richmond, the hiring and tenure processes, and his service-focused academic career. Slaughter also reflected on institutional changes he would like to see in order to reduce discrimination and promote diversity in faculty. <img src="https://memory.richmond.edu/files/misc/SlaughterRaymond_1980.jpg" alt="" /> Raymond Slaughter was born in 1945 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He graduated from Kentucky State University in 1967, and attended Howard University Law School and obtained his law degree in 1970. He worked for public accounting firm Ernst & Ernst in Detroit Michigan, and then began teaching at Bucknell University. In 1977, he moved to Richmond and began teaching in the accounting department of the Robins School of Business, where he taught for 41 years before his retirement in 2018. Description An account of the resource In a 20-4 vote, the faculty of the E. Claiborne Robins School of Business rejects a motion passed by the Arts and Sciences Faculty recommending that “sexual orientation” be added to the University of Richmond’s anti-discrimination policy. The faculty of Arts and Sciences approved this recommendation on the condition that it attain further approval from the Business School, Law School, Administration, and Trustees before implementation. According to R. Clifton Poole, Dean of the Business School, the motion was born out of a discussion surrounding student discrimination in the ROTC program on campus, and that the motion concealed a “hidden agenda,” one that attempts to remove the ROTC program from campus. Joseph D. Harbaugh, dean of The T.C. Williams School of Law, disapproves of the recommendation, claiming he has “…no evidence that American business uses sexual orientation as an employment standard.” Without this evidence, he believes discrimination based on sexual orientation is not applicable to the policies of the American Association of Law Schools, which the school operates under. A member of the University of Richmond’s Lambda Coalition spoke about this motion, explaining that the organization does not wish for the removal of the ROTC program from campus, but instead pleads for a change in the homophobic policies of the Department of Defense. Williams School of Law Victor Mba-Jonas responds to an opinion piece written by Mr. Scott Shepard criticizing the name change and mere existence of the Multicultural Student Union (MSU) at the University of Richmond. Mba-Jonas responds by outlining the history of racism and discrimination specifically at the University of Richmond, which he believes to be “…a college for blond hair and blue eyes.” He further points out the systemic racial inequities apparent at the University, from the all-white police force to the majority white dining hall management over a mostly black staff. He describes an encounter with the campus police after a white female student had reported Mba-Jonas just for walking by her dormitory, an experience that Mba-Jonas says is unique to his status as a black man on campus. Description An account of the resource This 1991 Collegian article focuses on a legal battle that was between Harry Snead, a T.C. Williams School of Law professor and the University of Richmond. Snead was suspended from classroom teaching in November 1988 due to his "sexist and racial remarks in the classroom." His lawsuit against the University was on the basis that being suspended from teaching was a violation of his tenured rights. In response, the University demanded that Snead assure the University that he would not make any more sexual or racist remarks, and he refused. Snead explained how "it's mainly blacks, women and certain religious groups that have this fervor to make you say things just the way they want you to say them." The dispute was eventually settled the day of the trial, and the settlement was kept sealed by order of the court. Snead remained as a paid member of the faculty but was not permitted to teach.
