Title A name given to the resource Article "Spider Symbol Studied" Description An account of the resource This article reports that the University Student Government Association (USGA) was hoping that the majority of University of Richmond students and employees would approve a new version of the spider mascot, who at the time had been wearing a Confederate uniform since 1948. The new mascot was pictured above the article and described as "a fierce little character with chubby cheeks, a scowl, and two antennas." Ellen Haden was the chair of the USGA Spider Symbol Committee, and is quoted in the article stating "(Ralph) Mayo had designed the first Spider (the one in a Confederate uniform) but it's not an official one because no on approved it, and approval is what we're seeking now." The modern look of the new symbol was meant to "keep up with the new image of the University." The new symbol was designed by Bill Nelson, an illustrator for the Richmond Mercury. (<a href="http://memory.richmond.edu/items/show/2894" target="_blank">In 1948, students in Lambda Chi Alpha constructed a mascot with help from outside manufacturers and the creator of the Confederate spider mascot, School Shop manager Buddy Mayo</a>.) John Millard, a senior at Richmond College, commissioned and wore the costume. He used a picture of the "UR Spider man" and a Confederate uniform for the design, which he brought to six tailors before a friend made the costume. The saber came from the ROTC Department. This piece discusses the controversy of whether or not “Dixie” or “Dixie’s Land” should be played at the University of Richmond’s functions. Jeff Somers, the president of the freshman class, had previously said that “the song was written by a Negro”, but then realized that he was mistaken as he did not understand the concept of “blackface”. The article then goes on to reference Carl Wittke’s book, Tambo and Bones, which states that “Dixie” was created by a “blackface minstrel, Daniel Decatur Emmett of Mt. Vernon, Ohio”. Emmett was one of the original “Big Four” who got the Virginia Minstrels together in the 1840s. Emmett wrote the song for a show in New York City, and was first used for Bryant’s Minstrels, but quickly became popular in the North. Buddy Mayo, the former proprietor of the college shop, attended a conference called the Association of College Student Shops in Cleveland, Ohio in 1947 where he met a famous caricaturist named Arthur Evans and together they drew up plans for the Confederate Spider. “This little fellow, who is to be seen conspicuously displayed on books, jackets and car windows, is the insignia which has caught the eye of U.R. student's.” The Confederate Spider came to be as a result of students thinking that the traditional emblem lacked color, the confederate uniform was added to give it meaning. Brothers from Lambda Chi Alpha presented the design to the university community, and the mascot made its first appearance at a football game between the University of Richmond and Washington and Lee. Nelson Weber, presumably a Lambda Chi Alpha brother, was invived to a local clothes manufacturing plant to create the eight-limbed costume. The head was designed by a professional artist on Franklin Street in Richmond City. Hat makers and alumni Holmes and Douglas Britton designed the hat, which required special equipment from New York to accomdate the large size. In total, making a Confederate Spider mascot should have cost over $200, but the labor, time, and materials were donated by Etchison Hat Company and Rockingham Clothes. Buddy Mayo donated the mask. Mr. Massie said that such a claim was an attack on the First Amendment and Mr. Williams, along with other members of the Senate, must publicly rescind the "illegal" resolution. Furthermore, Mr.Larkin believed that the playing of the Dixie or the display of the Confederate Flag were not signs of racism and any furor over these issues was just the "minority attempting to force its will on the majority." He further went on to say that the Dixie is a happy and catchy tune while the Confederate flag is a part of American history and "should not be forgotten." The committee wanted to place plaques on buildings in Richmond that served as hospitals during the Civil War, which Goddin called "the War Between the States." Larkin wrote to Modlin because Modlin and his wife had given money to the University Band to travel abroad, but Larkin, along with several student officers, decided to cancel the trip. Larkin felt that it was not in the Band’s and university’s best interest to "undertake something of this magnitude without complete representation and confidence."
