<text>This is a report on the current state and history of minority students on campus as well as student engagement with minorities from the University of Richmond in 1973. This fact sheet lists the efforts the University of Richmond has made with integration and increasing campus diversity. It also mentions how students themselves have tried to engage with black communities. This sheet states that the University had "made constant and continuing efforts, through a variety of actions and programs, to comply with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964." The University claimed to make an active effort to recruit black students and make their nondiscrimination policies known to all. In the 1972-1973 academic year, the University of Richmond had 99 black full and part-time students, 11 Asian students, and 10 "Spanish Surnamed Americans" making minority students 2.1% of total enrollment.</text>

<text>This is the Annual Report from the Office of Registrar and Director of Admissions for Richmond College submitted by the Director of Admissions, Thomas N. Pollard, Jr., to President George M. Modlin for the 1970-1971 academic school year. That year, Richmond College had 1,345 students, which was a decline in attendance compared to the previous year that had 1,382. More than half of the student body, 53.8%, of students were from Virginia, but outside of Richmond They also had seven foreign students. 78 students withdrew after the first semester for either being academically deficient, transferring to the Business School, or graduating. 733 students were accepted but only 366 enrolled. The Registrar's Office had a 66% turnover in staff for that year. However, the writer wasn't surprised because of the low salaries of those doing clerical work. They hoped that the duties and purpose of the Registrar could be consolidated and centralized. Pollard also claimed that the college was not as popular with highly qualified students. The Office of Admissions received lists of qualified black and minority students from programs and organizations like Project Access, College Entrance Examination Board, and the National Scholarship Service and Fund for Negro Students. The office also sent personal letters from the office with information about the University to black and minority students. A student committee suggested that the University needed an increase in publicity, have better information on financial aid, and use current students in recruiting. They concluded the report with recommendations and a proposed budget of $15,810, which was a $10,000 proposed increase in funding from the previous year.</text>

<text>This is the Annual Report on Westhampton College from the Director of Admissions and Placement, Mary-Allen Anderson, for the 1970-1971 academic year. Anderson began the report by explaining Westhampton College's recruiting efforts from the fall which included visiting thirty-two "Traditional College Day Programs of selected Virginia High Schools" (and two Maryland high schools). However, there was a decline in attendance to these admissions events by students and their parents compared to previous years. Anderson and the other admissions officers believed that interest would rise again once "the racially integrated school population becomes more stabilized." There had been an increase of out-of-state visitors, however many of the people interested in the University wanted to make sure it didn't have a "girls school atmosphere" because many had the desire to mix with men both socially and educationally. Westhampton College students had pointed out their desire to have better racial and socioeconomic diversity, so a dozen Westhampton College students took it upon themselves to return to their high schools to recruit black students. Some students even asked if they could travel with admissions officers. Anderson was "sympathetic" to their efforts but didn't want it to "jeopardize their own academic programs." The students even organized a "Black Day" on April 27, 1971, with the intentions of having eighty black high school students visit campus for the day. <p>Westhampton College accepted 1,884 students and 121 accepted their offer. Among that 121 were a black applicant and a Greek applicant who requested additional time to accept the offer to sort out their finances. Employment opportunities were less than sufficient that year as many students were forced to settle for part-time work. She ended the report by expressing her gratitude for her and her co-workers' time working for the Westhampton College Office of Admissions. She did so because faculty had voted to combine the admissions offices of Westhampton and Richmond College into one overarching department. That year, they enrolled 33 out-of-state and 88 Virginia women in the freshman class. Nine black women applied, three were offered admission, and one accepted the offer. The majority of applicants were Baptist. 7 Jewish women applied, however, only 2 were accepted and enrolled. SAT scores and school rank numbers were also included.</p></text>

The visitation day had been proposed in October to introduce black students to the campus and encourage them to join the community. All but one high school in the Richmond-Henrico-Chesterfield area was represented among the 65 students who attended. Some students mentioned not knowing where or what the University was. The day included registration, campus tours, a speech by President Modlin, discussions by various professors and faculty of the services available, and a "Raft Debate" for informative entertainment. All those involved with the program felt it was a success at opening the university and creating a "two way avenue for progress."</text>

<text>In this article, the author discussed how the main campus of the University was “truly integrated” for the first time. In the fall of 1968, five full-time black students were admitted to the main campus. The author claimed that there had been reports that the Department of Health, Education, and Welfare (HEW) was “applying pressure” to the University to integrate its faculty. The author also claimed that there had been talks of the University doing a faculty exchange program with a Historically Black University called Virginia Union University, as Virginia Union was doing a similar program with Randolph-Macon College. Virginia Union expressed much willingness to participate in this program with the University of Richmond. <em>The Collegian</em> urged more complete integration, as the white students had only had limited contact with black people throughout their lives. The author felt that they deserved to get a chance to experience the “educated Negro,” rather than the negative depiction of black people they saw through the media in cities such as Chicago, Detroit, Watts, etc. The author claimed that the University could not claim to be a true liberal arts institution without providing its students the opportunity to be exposed to all “races, creeds, colors, and social backgrounds” through the process of full integration.</text>

Mack was the first black athlete to be signed by the University of Richmond and chose Richmond over other prestigious schools like Dartmouth, Davidson, Lafayette, and Western Maryland. Mack says he is excited to attend Richmond because it has a good academic reputation, but notes that "there really is no social life to offer the black athlete here, but I must admit that everyone has been real nice to me." <text>This article outlines the "Black Students Day" event that students at University of Richmond organized with the hopes of "familiarizing] the blacks with the University of Richmond and make them realize that Richmond has something to offer them." The event was proposed to bring more than 100 high school students from Henrico, Chesterfield, and Richmond to campus where they would attend classes, eat lunch, attend the raft debate, and socialize with both Richmond College and Westhampton College students. The Richmond Student Government Association (RSGA) president, Steve Nock, hoped the event would be successful enough to increase its funding in the future to expand the program outside of Virginia. Additionally, Nock remarked that he wanted the event to help "end the white, Southern reputation Richmond has developed over the years." A black student day had recently been held at the University of Virginia, where it was hugely successful. Their coordinator, Mrs. Elizabeth Johnson, also assisted with organizing UR's black student day. Both the Westhampton College president, Nancy Benfield, and the Richmond College director of admissions, Thomas N Pollard, Jr., were excited by the doors this event could open to move forward with diversifying and integrating University of Richmond's campus.</text>
