The article lists how many incoming students are Black, offering a glimpse at how small the community of Black students was at the University. Faculty view the changes with optimism, with thanks to efforts such as the Open Campus. Thomas N. Pollard Jr., director of admissions at Richmond College, stated that an increase in diversity would be linked to "increasing contacts and publications, and spreading the good word." Mary Allen Anderson, director of admissions at Westhampton College, suggested that academic early-start programs should be promoted to Black students, such as remedial programs offered at University College.</text>

The program was formed by the Richmond College and Westhampton College senates "in an effort to familiarize the black community with the University of Richmond." The goal of Black Students Day was to help create a more diverse student body at the University of Richmond. Students believed that the event would appeal to more black students because it was created by student organizations. The visitation day enabled black students to attend classes and meet the RC and WC deans. The day ended with a panel discussion in the Dennis auditorium with information about available financial aid and counseling.</text>

The visitation day had been proposed in October to introduce black students to the campus and encourage them to join the community. All but one high school in the Richmond-Henrico-Chesterfield area was represented among the 65 students who attended. Some students mentioned not knowing where or what the University was. The day included registration, campus tours, a speech by President Modlin, discussions by various professors and faculty of the services available, and a "Raft Debate" for informative entertainment. All those involved with the program felt it was a success at opening the university and creating a "two way avenue for progress."</text>

<text>This <em>Collegian</em> article, written by Linda Tatum, a staff writer, is about the University's attempts to recruit more black students. Thomas N. Pollard, Jr., the director of admissions for Richmond College, said that social life for black students needed to be improved, so that those students, pleased with their experiences at the university, would recruit their friends. Pollard said that the university had organized a Black Student Day in the spring of 1971 to recruit local juniors, from whom the University hoped to receive applications. No specific programs had been created to ensure a more diversified student body. Stanley Davis and Belinda Carr, two of the university's approximately 12 black students, agreed that there were few social activities available to black students, while Norman Williams -- a black student and a member of the track team -- and Beverly Robinson -- another black student -- expressed disappointment at the low number of black students attending the University.</text>

<text>This is the Annual Report from the Office of Registrar and Director of Admissions for Richmond College submitted by the Director of Admissions, Thomas N. Pollard, Jr., to President George M. Modlin for the 1970-1971 academic school year. That year, Richmond College had 1,345 students, which was a decline in attendance compared to the previous year that had 1,382. More than half of the student body, 53.8%, of students were from Virginia, but outside of Richmond They also had seven foreign students. 78 students withdrew after the first semester for either being academically deficient, transferring to the Business School, or graduating. 733 students were accepted but only 366 enrolled. The Registrar's Office had a 66% turnover in staff for that year. However, the writer wasn't surprised because of the low salaries of those doing clerical work. They hoped that the duties and purpose of the Registrar could be consolidated and centralized. Pollard also claimed that the college was not as popular with highly qualified students. The Office of Admissions received lists of qualified black and minority students from programs and organizations like Project Access, College Entrance Examination Board, and the National Scholarship Service and Fund for Negro Students. The office also sent personal letters from the office with information about the University to black and minority students. A student committee suggested that the University needed an increase in publicity, have better information on financial aid, and use current students in recruiting. They concluded the report with recommendations and a proposed budget of $15,810, which was a $10,000 proposed increase in funding from the previous year.</text>

In this piece, Morrill discusses the University's diversity issue and emphasizes the need to broaden its base of diversity within the student population to become as diverse as it wanted to be. Morrill acknowledges UR's past attempts to diversify, and states that he believes it is was "heading the right direction." However, Morrill believes more needs to be done. One factor that Morrill mentions as being a deterrent regardless of race was the high tuition -- $12,500 (approximately $25,000 adjusted for inflation in 2016, in 2017 the tuition is approximately $60,000). He suggests increasing financial aid packages for students.</text>

<text>This article -- published on February 21, 1980, in <em>The Collegian</em> -- is a feature in which the University of Richmond's Intrafraternity Council (IFC) held a meeting to vote on the addition of the campus's first black fraternity, Phi Beta Sigma. According to the article, the idea had been introduced by several basketball players to Wayne Biggs, the president of the IFC during that time, who enthusiastically promoted the proposal, highlighting its social benefit to black students. Further in the article, the author explains how although fraternities were open to bid to both black and white students, only one black student was actually part of a fraternity, hinting at the racially discriminatory fraternity system. The addition of Phi Beta Sigma would create a social life for black students, but also would help "attract and retain students" to the university, according to Max Vest, the director of student activities and adviser to the IFC. This comment introduces a new perspective of this proposal as it suggests that their is more than one motive for the establishment of a historically black fraternity, namely to appeal to black students.</text>

<text>This article -- published on September 11, 1980, in <em>The Collegian</em> -- describes the potential addition of University of Richmond's first black fraternity, Phi Beta Sigma. In the article, it mentions Richmond senior, James Reed, who would serve as the fraternity's president. The organization would not be rushing in the fall semester, but rather the spring, as most of its members were on the football team. The article also describes how the fraternity would be different from pre-existing fraternities, including Phi Beta Sigma's stepping tradition. The fraternity's goals include creating a social life for black students on campus, and part of this goal includes diversifying the music played at social events. According to Reed, "Once blacks realize they can come here for academics and a social life on campus, we will be bringing culture to the University; they will come here for academics, not athletics." Further in the article, it is mentioned that there was no space, specifically a lodge, for the fraternity, as the unused ZBT lodge was being used for housing and costs of building a new one would be around $85,000. They were also interested in bringing the sister sorority to the Sigma fraternity, the "Sigma doves" called the Zeta Phi Beta sorority.
