Stanley Davis was the only black, non-athlete living in the Richmond College dorms, and Belinda Carr is the first black student living in the Westhampton College dorm. At the time, UR had less than one percent black students enrolled, no full time black faculty or administrators, and one part-time black faculty member. The students cited the lack of social life for black students, the high cost of tuition, lack of black faculty and administrators, and poor recruitment of minorities as the major problems UR faced in attracting more black students and in pleasing the ones they already had.</text>

At the time of the article, there were forty five black students and only six of those were women. Additionally, the article argues that the reason for the inequality is because the University directs its recruitment of black students towards athletes. Michelle Nickins said, “This school is locked into the type of person it will accept; that reputation gets around. Blacks who attend the University have to be looking for problems to tackle.” Other students that were interviewed talked about problems like, being the only black student in a classroom, or being told that there were more black students on campus by the University then there actually were.</text>

The article introduces a committee that specifically targeted recruiting a more diverse population of black students given that the majority of them were athletes. The committee was also geared towards bringing in more black faculty members. Leland Melvin, one of the two student representatives on the committee said, “A black identity needs to be established through black alliance, for example.” University of Richmond had a strong reputation of being a white, Baptist institution. Melvin suggests that through the establishment of a black alliance, it could be an indicator to prospective black students at UR that black students are in fact present on campus.</text>
