Description
An account of the resource
In this online <em>University of Richmond Collegian</em> article, sophomore and president of Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority, Inc.’s chapter on campus, Destiny LeVere, decided to host a student panel to address race and racism at the University of Richmond. Titled “Race at Racism,” the panel occurred at the end of Black History Month. LeVere explains that, "When [she] asked Caucasian males to participate, they all said no”. Specifics discussed during the event include the roommate selection process for incoming freshman and offensive decorations in the Heilman Dining Center during Black History Month. Although two University offices (the Office of Multicultural Affairs and Common Ground, Richmond's diversity initiative) are fighting racism on campus, students at the event also bring up the “Richmond after dark phenomenon,” referring to segregated social events and parties. Discomfort in the classroom is also discussed. LeVere would like more events like "Race at Richmond" to happen in the future without professor participation "because they might have a skewed perspective based only on classroom observations."
