Description An account of the resource The Fall 1991 issue of the Messenger prompted University officials to withdraw the magazine from the admissions office and no longer send it to alumni. A memo from Gerald Quigg, vice president of University relations, claimed that crude language used in the magazine "showed a lack of class" and it did not seem educated. The memo was sent to Leonard Goldberg, vice president for student affairs, and Steven Barza, the Messenger's faculty advisor. Editor Jeff Fowler, who was not sent the memo, responded by saying that though the words may offend some, it's no reason to stop circulation of the magazine. Sunni McMillan, whose two poems in the issue contained alleged "four-letter words," claimed there was no "literary reason" given for why the works had been singled out and that she hadn't meant to offend anyone with her work. Faculty advisor Steven Barza claims that the magazine's editors are independent and that the purpose of a literary magazine is to "evoke some response," but doesn't believe there is a threat of censorship. Description An account of the resource In this article, the author discusses how the fall 1991 issue of the University’s literary magazine, The Messenger, prompted University officials to consider withdrawing the magazine from the admissions office due to the use of profanity. Gerald Quigg, the Vice President of University Relations, described the magazine as “gross and demonstrating a lack of education.” Quigg claimed that he was not censoring the magazine, but did question its appropriateness and if it should continue to be published. The magazine had been removed from the admissions office and would no longer be sent to alumni, according to vice president for student affairs Leonard Goldberg. Covey Date A point or period of time associated with an event in the lifecycle of the resource 1931 Description An account of the resource A poem, "I Am the Lawyer written by Louis Lande, from New York City. Louis Lande was not a student of Richmond College, but his poem was reprinted from the New York Law Journal, Wednesday, May 28, 1930 and was included in The 1931 Web. Lande was a lawyer in New York City, after graduating from law school at New York University. The poem speaks of himself as a lawyer who provides equal acceptance, support, and punishment for all. Attention should be drawn especially to line 10 which reads "I pleaded for the freedom of the slave in Greece and for the captive in Rome." and line 13 which says, "I defended the slave. I was an abolitionist. I signed the Emancipation Proclamation." Line 18 also regards treatment of all clients: "I seek the equality of mankind, regardless of color, caste, sex, or religion." Making a political statement, and possibly part of an advertising campaign, Lande is clear of his acceptance and appreciation of non-white citizens. Reprinted in the 1931 Web, "I Am the Lawyer" comes with no description or reasoning behind why the poem was reprinted, a rare act within The Web. However, 1930 would have been the 10 year anniversary of the reorganization of the law department into the separate School of Law, so the poem could be a celebration of this 10th anniversary and the ideals that students in the Richmond Law School tried to uphold.
