Their talk show tackles difficult discussions such as homosexuality and sex, while also addressing activities around campus and the Richmond community. There is no structure to the show as Young and Flora go with the flow. Listeners tune in from The University of Richmond campus all the way to the Virginia Commonwealth University. Through vigorous advertising on behalf of Young and Flora, College Talk is a popular radio show which draws-in its listeners through chances to win prizes, in addition to the controversial topics that are discussed. During a comical part of the interview with the two co-hosts, Young and Flora both agreed that they enjoyed the female callers compared to the male callers because, “they offer more varied and individual responses than most of the men.” College Talk is an expanding passion of both Young and Flora.</text>

<text>The Fall 1991 issue of the Messenger prompted University officials to withdraw the magazine from the admissions office and no longer send it to alumni. A memo from Gerald Quigg, vice president of University relations, claimed that crude language used in the magazine "showed a lack of class" and it did not seem educated. The memo was sent to Leonard Goldberg, vice president for student affairs, and Steven Barza, the Messenger's faculty advisor. Editor Jeff Fowler, who was not sent the memo, responded by saying that though the words may offend some, it's no reason to stop circulation of the magazine. Sunni McMillan, whose two poems in the issue contained alleged "four-letter words," claimed there was no "literary reason" given for why the works had been singled out and that she hadn't meant to offend anyone with her work. Faculty advisor Steven Barza claims that the magazine's editors are independent and that the purpose of a literary magazine is to "evoke some response," but doesn't believe there is a threat of censorship.</text>

Governor Holton wrote: "This matter is giving me great concern, but I have reason to be optimistic that there will be a better attitude in the future on the part of HEW officials who will be dealing with Virginia schools. <text>In this letter, University of Richmond President George Modlin wrote to Virginia Governor Lindwood Holton on October 8, 1970. Modlin wrote as a follow up to a telephone conversation the two had had earlier in the week in regards to the relationship between the university and the Department of Health, Education, and Welfare (HEW) Office of Civil Rights. Modlin shared all the correspondence the university had shared with HEW. Modlin stated that the "University has cooperated in good faith and has complied with all recommendations of that Office until the receipt of the recent letter which became public a few days ago." On October 5, 1970, the Richmond Times-Dispatch had published an article in regards to a letter from Dr. Eloise Severinson, Regional Director for HEW's Office of Civil Rights (available here). On October 7, 1970, President Modlin wrote to Dr. Severinson about the issues he believed the publication of this letter would cause the university (available here).

Modlin concludes this correspondence to the governor by stating: "The degree of interference by the Office for Civil Rights into the academic and administrative affairs of our Virginia instituions of higher education, both public and private, is greatly disturbing." Dr. Severinson's original communication included suggestions for how the University of Richmond could better comply with the Civil Rights Act of 1964.</text>

Modlin to Dr. Eloise Severinson, regional civil rights director from the Department of Health, Education and Welfare (HEW), is responding to a recent article from The Richmond Times-Dispatch, which discussed a letter that was sent from Dr. Severinson to Modlin. Modlin writes that he assumes that the letter was disclosed from Dr. Severinson’s office, as it “has not left [his] office.” Modlin goes on to say that it is unfortunate that the letter was released, as he hasn’t been able to meet with his Board of Trustees to discuss Severinson’s suggestions, and writes that “such publicity makes more difficult our efforts to carry out your recommendations, especially those requiring the good will of black students, black faculty members, and predominantly black institutions.” Modlin writes that he hopes that HEW does not think that publicity will help accomplish the goals of their organization, and writes that he would like some assurance of good faith from their organization moving forward.</text>
