Louis Lande was not a student of Richmond College, but his poem was reprinted from the New York Law Journal, Wednesday, May 28, 1930 and was included in The 1931 Web. Lande was a lawyer in New York City, after graduating from law school at New York University. The poem speaks of himself as a lawyer who provides equal acceptance, support, and punishment for all. Attention should be drawn especially to line 10 which reads "I pleaded for the freedom of the slave in Greece and for the captive in Rome." and line 13 which says, "I defended the slave. I was an abolitionist. I signed the Emancipation Proclamation." Line 18 also regards treatment of all clients: "I seek the equality of mankind, regardless of color, caste, sex, or religion." Making a political statement, and possibly part of an advertising campaign, Lande is clear of his acceptance and appreciation of non-white citizens. Reprinted in the 1931 Web, "I Am the Lawyer" comes with no description or reasoning behind why the poem was reprinted, a rare act within The Web. However, 1930 would have been the 10 year anniversary of the reorganization of the law department into the separate School of Law, so the poem could be a celebration of this 10th anniversary and the ideals that students in the Richmond Law School tried to uphold. The visitation day had been proposed in October to introduce black students to the campus and encourage them to join the community. All but one high school in the Richmond-Henrico-Chesterfield area was represented among the 65 students who attended. Some students mentioned not knowing where or what the University was. The day included registration, campus tours, a speech by President Modlin, discussions by various professors and faculty of the services available, and a "Raft Debate" for informative entertainment. Date A point or period of time associated with an event in the lifecycle of the resource January 1960 Description An account of the resource The winter 1960 Alumni Bulletin featured the account of Park P. Dickerson (RC '55) and his time at University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, South Africa, as a Rotary Foundation Fellow. Dickerson discusses South Africa's culture, the people, race relations, and his own experiences. While Dickerson was in South Africa, he learned about race relations in the country: there were the "Europeans"/"whites" and "non-Europeans"/"non-whites." Dickerson defined apartheid as "the complete separation of the races in every walk of life," and "more comprehensive and consistent than the policy of segregation." The South African Nationalist Party supported and implemented apartheid because they believed that the Bantu peoples native to South Africans could develop socially, economically, and politically through total separation. The Nationalist Party envisioned separate territories for blacks and whites where each race would not have rights in the other race's territory. Dickerson outlined the implications of apartheid that he experienced while abroad, such as the legal segregation of University of Witwatersrand despite disagreement from the Chancellor and the school. The show will star sophomore Chauntee Schuler as Nora and freshman Steve Travers as Torvald, Nora’s husband. Interviews of the cast members, Assistant Director Julie Bevevino, and Director Walter Schoen provide insight as to the atmosphere on set and the context of the play. Eastman travelled to England for two months to teach school children about indigenous American customs and race relations with white settlers. The purpose of the Anglo-Saxon club was to preserve Anglo-Saxon civilization in the United States and to participate in the "intelligent selection and exclusion of immigrants". The club had various chapters on college campuses throughout Virginia, many of whom were in attendance for the meeting held in Richmond.
