<text>This short story written by Westhampton College freshman, Mary McDaniel, describes her experience as a homesick freshman. She talks how her expectations of leaving home were different from how she felt once she got to Richmond and how she misses the comforts of home. She vividly describes the day she left home to go to Richmond and how her, "old colored mammy [was] standing on the steps, crying at the thought of her "baby chile's" going away". Mary's "mammy" resembles the stereotypical “mammy” figure associated with popular depictions of black women during this period. In addition, it is clear that the relationship between Mary and her African American caretaker is very strong because she said her "mammy" was crying at the sight of her leaving home. </text>

The article claimed that the trend was toward resegregation. Citing Washington as a "model city" for school integration in 1954, the article traced the growth of the black population and the white population's movement. Black students moved into white schools as white students moved out. In 1959, there were 64 schools in Washington that had 10 or fewer white students in comparison to 53 of these schools in 1953. Also, out of 165 public schools at the time, 96 percent were 90 percent or more black. This article used this data to point to greater segregation than when desegregation begun.</text>

Mitchell Literary Society, explaining that the rider to their constitutional amendment, which granted the society president the right to stop any conversation that he deemed hindering to the regular procedures of the meeting. The President explains that "This rider was a very necessary thing in that a small minority in the Society was obsessed [sic] with the idea of racial equality and was so intent I upon spreading its principles that the Society had little time for anything else." He also explains that the accusation that the literary society sought to hide the development is false, because they simply were trying to keep Iggers accusatory letter out of the paper until they had crafted a response.</text>

<text>This letter was sent on April 13, 1954, by L. Maynard Catchings to George M. Modlin, the President of the University of Richmond. Catchings wrote to Modlin regarding racial integration at the university. Catchings was a part of the Student Movement of the YMCA, a Christian organization that "aided students in overcoming racial prejudices" because it is "the basic Christian belief that, all men are brothers under God, and that discrimination on grounds of race creates a serious gap between our belief and our practices." The Student Movement of the YMCA sponsored interracial student-faculty conferences. Catchings wanted to offer his organization’s services to the university and other private, Southern, Christian colleges. He also asked Modlin questions about racial integration at the university.</text>
