Keeton, Page Description An account of the resource The Special Committee on Racial Discrimination of the Association of American Law Schools published these two reports for 1954. The Interim Report began by recounting how the 1953 Report of this special committee believed that the new committee of 1954 should do its best at achieving the Association's objective of ending racial discrimination in its member law schools and report any non-compliance. Member schools were in noncompliance until they admitted black students or announced their intentions to do so. They had noticed a little progress with the list of non-complying schools going from eighteen to sixteen that year. There were two Virginia schools not in compliance. The final report suggested that because of the recent Supreme Court decision with Brown v. Board of Education, that maybe they shouldn't enforce compliance just yet. The Committee recommended that the Association continues in attempting to persuade compliance with its member schools and consider the effects of the Supreme Court decision. Description An account of the resource This document is a letter from David F. Cavers, the Chairman of the Special Committee on Racial Discrimination of the Association of American Law Schools, to T. Justin Moore, the Rector of the University of Richmond’s Board of Trustee, that was sent on February 4, 1955. In 1951, the Association amended its Articles of Association so that one of its objectives for member schools was to not discriminate on the basis of race. In 1954, the Association voted that "copies of the Special Committee’s Interim and Final Reports for 1954 be sent ‘to deans of member schools not in compliance with the Association’s anti-discrimination objective and to the administrations and governing boards of the universities and colleges with which those schools are connected," which were attached to this letter. Other schools in the Association were encouraged by the successful integration at other member schools, so Cavers believed that racial discrimination in law schools would end that year. Furthermore, to reinforce the non-discrimination objective, the Special Committee would hold a meeting in Washington, D.C. to discuss discrimination. Cavers wrote that he hopes that the university will end racial discrimination and extended the Special Committee’s services. The show will star sophomore Chauntee Schuler as Nora and freshman Steve Travers as Torvald, Nora’s husband. This piece is another criticism of student Harvey Whitney and his contributions to the Collegian newspaper. Dick Gregory was a black comedian, author, actor, activist, and civil rights leader. His speech was attended by a crowd of about 800, mainly consisting of students. Gregory states that the duty of young people is to "get blamed for everything" as they are the "new American nigger" and "Indian," however, he asserts that the young people are key to solving "this country's problems." Gregory goes on to elaborate that minorities are scapegoats that are blamed for all of the country's problems. He points out racism in the United States as "beautiful people" such as Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Malcolm X are being wiped out while others are ignored by the police. He states that this racism has trickled down to the black youth. He gives an example of a five-year-old black boy who, when asked to draw himself, draws a picture of an animal—Gregory views this is a result of black people being stereotyped as wrongdoers while those in policy-making positions are white. Gregory argues that black people in America are "reacting to your racism." After Dick Gregory's speech, many alumni were irate and sent letters to President Modlin articulating their concerns that he was allowed to speak on campus. Some alumni even ceased their donations, but President Modlin affirmed the principle of free speech as essential to the University. In 1973, Dick Gregory returned to campus to speak in another lecture series. Dickerson (RC '55) and his time at University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, South Africa, as a Rotary Foundation Fellow. Dickerson discusses South Africa's culture, the people, race relations, and his own experiences. While Dickerson was in South Africa, he learned about race relations in the country: there were the "Europeans"/"whites" and "non-Europeans"/"non-whites." Dickerson defined apartheid as "the complete separation of the races in every walk of life," and "more comprehensive and consistent than the policy of segregation." The South African Nationalist Party supported and implemented apartheid because they believed that the Bantu peoples native to South Africans could develop socially, economically, and politically through total separation. The Nationalist Party envisioned separate territories for blacks and whites where each race would not have rights in the other race's territory. Dickerson outlined the implications of apartheid that he experienced while abroad, such as the legal segregation of University of Witwatersrand despite disagreement from the Chancellor and the school. Donaldson, was the opening piece in the Fall 1957 edition of The Messenger. In it, Donaldson describes his hesitance toward forced integration. He begins his argument by asserting that he is "not defending the prejudices of the Southern White" and "not condoning his willingness to resort to violence, to disobey the laws, or to close the public schools in order to preserve segregation." However, he sees Southern schools as not ready for such a change as integration, and argues that, if segregation is an evil to be removed, forced integration only introduces new evil and hatred. He urges the federal government to pay mind to "local conditions" before using force to enforce school integration. The rich American never purchased anything in the store and was being wrongly convicted. Carl's anger toward the man is displayed in his use of sharp racist language.
