<text>This article showcases the work of University of Richmond alum A. E. Dick Howard (RC '54). At the time, Howard was preparing for a career in law at the University of Virginia, prior to which he spent time studying philosophy, politics, and economics. Howard discusses an assertion made by an Oxford graduate: "If we were going to boycott South African goods, then we should boycott goods made in the Southern States of America, for the Negro there is as oppressed as in South Africa." Howard argues that even if nations show an interest in and affection for America, it does not prevent misconceptions, stating, "if America is to win the battle for men's minds, it has a major public relations job to do." Howard argues Americans who travel overseas must make use of the opportunity to build "an image of an America in which 'inalienable rights' are more than a phrase and 'In God, we trust' is more than an inscription on a coin." The article seems to indicate a friendship between Howard and alum George Mitchell (RC '23).</text>

<text>This <em>Collegian</em> article summarizes the main points of Dick Gregory's lecture on campus in 1970. Dick Gregory was a black comedian, author, actor, activist, and civil rights leader. His speech was attended by a crowd of about 800, mainly consisting of students. Gregory states that the duty of young people is to "get blamed for everything" as they are the "new American nigger" and "Indian," however, he asserts that the young people are key to solving "this country's problems." Gregory goes on to elaborate that minorities are scapegoats that are blamed for all of the country's problems. He points out racism in the United States as "beautiful people" such as Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Malcolm X are being wiped out while others are ignored by the police. He states that this racism has trickled down to the black youth. He gives an example of a five-year-old black boy who, when asked to draw himself, draws a picture of an animal&mdash;Gregory views this is a result of black people being stereotyped as wrongdoers while those in policy-making positions are white. Gregory argues that black people in America are "reacting to your racism." After Dick Gregory's speech, many alumni were irate and sent letters to President Modlin articulating their concerns that he was allowed to speak on campus. Some alumni even ceased their donations, but President Modlin affirmed the principle of free speech as essential to the University. In 1973, Dick Gregory returned to campus to speak in another lecture series.</text>

The students adopted these measures because they felt the racist ideology often harboured in churches is incompatible with the teachings of the Bible. The resolution called for racial inclusivity in the church and on college campuses affiliated with the Southern Baptist church, and it additionally called for protection for church leadership, that they may voice their opinion without fear of economic consequence.</text>

<text>In this article, the author discussed how the main campus of the University was “truly integrated” for the first time. In the fall of 1968, five full-time black students were admitted to the main campus. The author claimed that there had been reports that the Department of Health, Education, and Welfare (HEW) was “applying pressure” to the University to integrate its faculty. The author also claimed that there had been talks of the University doing a faculty exchange program with a Historically Black University called Virginia Union University, as Virginia Union was doing a similar program with Randolph-Macon College. Virginia Union expressed much willingness to participate in this program with the University of Richmond. <em>The Collegian</em> urged more complete integration, as the white students had only had limited contact with black people throughout their lives. The author felt that they deserved to get a chance to experience the “educated Negro,” rather than the negative depiction of black people they saw through the media in cities such as Chicago, Detroit, Watts, etc. The author claimed that the University could not claim to be a true liberal arts institution without providing its students the opportunity to be exposed to all “races, creeds, colors, and social backgrounds” through the process of full integration.</text>

<text>This article -- published on October 23, 1980, in <em>The Collegian</em> -- describes the discontent that black students had toward the way students, faculty, and even parents treated them at the University of Richmond. Students who were interviewed described moments in which they were excluded from the dominant culture on campus, including moments where some were mistaken as staff. In addition, the interviewees described the cultural differences on campus, namely that most of the student population came from private schools, and thus had no previous interactions with black people. The article interviews several black students, none of whom are named, expressing a level of discomfort and strain in their attempts to interact with white students. A Westhampton College sophomore said, “People think you're the janitor in North Court or one of the workers in dining hall just because you're black.” Furthermore, black student athletes -- specifically football players -- felt "double prejudice" as they were seen "first as football player, second as blacks and third as students." The article also describes the newly instated Phi Beta Sigma fraternity, the first black fraternity on campus, when discussing the social life at Richmond. The social life was described as another reason for discontent as there was differences in music and that parties did not typically mix between white and black students. According to the article, every black student interviewed expressed the desire to "'take people for who they are inside - not just at face value.' They said that the University should rise the quota for blacks, increase the ratio of black males to black females and recruit black who are not athletes." </text>
