Description An account of the resource This article by Kenny Powers is about Mrs. Rae Green, a receptionist and switchboard operator in Gray Court. Mrs. Green said that she had a very close relationship with the women living in the dorm during the time she worked there, claiming she was like a big sister and “mama away from home” to many of the residents. Many of them did not talk to her at first as freshmen, but eventually “came out of their shell” and built a bond with her. Some of the residents echoed Mrs. Green’s sentiments of her being a sister and mother figure for them. Mrs. Green was married to a campus police officer, Sgt. Willie Green. Description An account of the resource In this oral history interview, Greg Mitchell sat down with Ayele d’Almeida (’20), Jacob Roberson (’19), and Mysia Perry (’21) on June 18, 2018, in Boatwright Memorial Library. Over the course of the forty minute interview, Mitchell shares stories and reflections from his time at the University of Richmond from 1976-1980. He speaks about his childhood experiences moving from a small Texas town to Washington D.C., time in the ROTC program, relationships with faculty members and athletic staff, experiences as a Black student-athlete on the football team, the relationships between Black students from the United States and Black international students, interactions with white students in housing and social life, how his time at the University of Richmond affected his professional career, and his passion for photography--which keeps him a staple at University of Richmond sporting events to this day. <img src="https://memory.richmond.edu/files/misc/mitchellgreg-1977.jpg" alt="" /> Gregory Mitchell was born in Belton, Texas just outside of Ft. Hood. When his Step-Father retired from the the Army, he moved his family to Washington, DC where Greg attended DC public schools. While attending Anacostia High School, Greg was recruited to play football at UR. He played on both offense & defense for Coach Jim Tait. While attending UR he met Marilyn Branch who he later married and they have two adult children. Greg initially thought he wanted a career in law enforcement, but after briefly working in a juvenile correctional facility, he reached out to a UR alum and got an interview with Philip Morris, USA. He was hired as a line supervisor in a tobacco processing factory. He worked in several different positions, departments and plants within PMUSA and retired after 31 years with the company. Since retirement, Greg has been able to return to his love of photography. She then attended Elkhardt Junior High, one year at Manchester High School and graduated from Huguenot High School. She was introduced to the University of Richmond by a high school English teacher when her class attended a literary symposium at UR. Marilyn was impressed by the university and decided to enroll where she could leave home to live on campus but still be close to her family. She was very naive about how her family would afford the tuition and in 1974, there were no scholarships or incentives from the university. Her parents sold land to a developer in order to afford the tuition as they felt strongly about providing a good education and helping to de-segregate a Richmond institution. Marilyn graduated from UR with a degree in Sociology and accepted a position managing a program assisting older adults to re-enter the work force with the local Area Agency on Aging, Senior Connections. She married Gregory Mitchell, who she met while attending UR and after almost 10 years, she paused her career to be a stay at home Wife, Mother and Volunteer. She volunteered as a troop committee member with her son’s Cub and Boy Scout Troops and she volunteered as newsletter editor for the troops and several of her son’s school PTA’s. Marilyn is a lifetime Girl Scout and was a troop leader for her daughter. Description An account of the resource In this oral history interview conducted via telephone with recording assistance from Eden Wolfer ('20) and Clemson University, Dr. Jesse N. Moore (B'81) spoke with Rena Xiao ('20) on June 26, 2018, in Boatwright Memorial Library. Over the course of the one hour and twenty minute interview, Moore shares about his recruitment to the University of Richmond via the football team and his relationships with fellow athletes on campus; his experience attending a predominantly white institution after growing up in a predominantly Black neighborhood in Newport News, VA and attending an integrated high school; visting other universities to build a social circle; applying and being accepted as one of the few Black students at the Robins School of Business; experiences of isolation in the business school; positive and negative interactions with faculty; participating in the ROTC program; how his experience as a Black student at the University of Richmond contributed to his experiences in graduate school and as a current faculty member at Clemson University; bringing a Black fraternity--Phi Beta Sigma--to campus for the first time; shares what has kept him from returning to the University of Richmond as an alumus; and gives advice for current Black students. <img src="https://memory.richmond.edu/files/misc/moorejesse1981-01.JPG" alt="" /> Jesse N. Moore is originally from Newport News, Va. He graduated from Homer L. Ferguson High School in 1977 as an Honors student and decorated Track and Field and Football athlete. <img src="https://memory.richmond.edu/files/misc/moorejesse1979-01.JPG" alt="" /> Moore (first on the left in the second row) with the University of Richmond football team, 1979. Jesse was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in the United States Army Reserve and earned a B.S. degree in Business Administration with an emphasis in Management from the E. Claiborne Robins School of Business at the University of Richmond in 1981. He was a member of the Spider football team starting 43 consecutive games as an offensive lineman earning All-South Independent First Team and Associated Press All-American Football Team Honorable Mention honors for his senior year season. After serving active duty military tours, abroad and domestically, and working in several middle management level positions in the corporate arena, Jesse returned to school. He earned a MBA degree with emphasis in Management from Northern Arizona University and a Ph.D. in Business Administration with emphasis in Marketing from the University of South Florida. At the time of the interview for the Race & Racism at UR Project, Jesse is an Associate Professor and Chair of the Department of Marketing in the College of Business at Clemson University. Jesse’s scholarly research publications have earned many awards and appear in some of the top Marketing related academic journals and conference proceedings. He has been a member of several Marketing and Sales associations including the American Marketing Association (AMA) and National Conference in Sales Management (NCSM), served on Editorial Review Boards, and taught a variety of Marketing classes in the USA and abroad. Jesse’s children are twins, Jay Moore and Stacey Moore Outlaw. His grandchildren are Sydney Moore, Ivey Moore, Jahara Outlaw, and twins, Johnathan Moore and Jaylin Moore.
