Jackson Cultural Center at the University of Virginia, was a guest speaker at the University of Richmond during Black History Month. During his speech, he focused on the importance and significance behind Black Greek Organizations, specifically the impact that these black fraternities and sororities made on historically white college campuses. There was particular emphasis on the traditions within these black fraternities and sororities that were regarded as “hazing” by the white communities at white institutions. Description An account of the resource Richmond College student, John Crooks, responds to Richmond College student Harvey Whitney’s Collegian submissions surrounding the topic of racism on campus. Crooks takes an infuriated tone as he condemns the language that is used by Whitney. As a black student on campus, Whitney wrote pieces talking about his negative experiences living at the University of Richmond, with writings that gradually become bolder. Crooks claims that Whitney believes in philosophy equal to that of Hitler, Hegel, and Karl Marx. He is livid that the white population is viewed as “oppressive racist hatemongers,” and continues his tirade on Whitney. The article concludes with a defensive argument of the Greek system and how individuals outside of the organization cannot criticize it. Crooks believes that these criticisms come from “resentful prejudices of a jealous social outcast." Betty Hamlet, head of the UR committee discussed the help of the Human Relations in putting together the five pilot committees heading the sessions. The awareness sessions are what Hamlet described as “a sensitivity type thing…situations where you are just thrown together and are trying to become friends.” She described the purpose as trying to understand where the other person is coming from.
