Betty Hamlet, head of the UR committee discussed the help of the Human Relations in putting together the five pilot committees heading the sessions. Jackson Cultural Center at the University of Virginia, was a guest speaker at the University of Richmond during Black History Month. During his speech, he focused on the importance and significance behind Black Greek Organizations, specifically the impact that these black fraternities and sororities made on historically white college campuses. Only 12% of the university’s undergraduates identify as African-American, Native American, Hispanic/Latino, Asian or biracial. From the black community on campus, “approximately 40%... receive the University’s CIGNA Scholarship." Many student statements appear in the article that voice veiled frustration with the university’s lack of diversity, which is followed by an example in which a student transfers to a different institution. Description An account of the resource As University of Richmond students watched the televised Black Action Movement at the University of Massachusetts, discussions and debates followed regarding instances of racism happening on campus. Sociology professors Henry Stewart and Willie Dell, alongside Westhampton College students, Richmond College students, and members of the Minority Student Union (MSU) all gathered in the Gottwald Science Center auditorium to kickstart a special report titled ‘Racism 101’. This panel created a space in which individuals shared personal opinions and experiences about integration, racism, and racial climates within the academic institution.
