<text>This article from The Richmond Collegian announces the University Carnival, which was to take place in the Millhiser gymnasium at 7:30 PM. The announcement notes that 800 students attended the Carnival in the previous year, and that, as in 1939, the proceeds from the 1940 Carnival would go to "the alumni fund for the proposed student center building." Different booths would give out prizes, and many campus organizations would perform, including all 11 fraternities, the student governments of Richmond College and Westhampton College, and other campus organizations. The University Players presented "The Evolution of Necking." Accompanying this article is a series of photos from the 1939 Carnival, featuring students dressed as Native Americans as well as students in blackface. </text>

Norton describes his standpoint on race relations, and how he feels that black people should not get any special precedents or programs based on their race because that is then racist. Norton states that Black History Month is racist, because if someone were to propose a white history month there would be outrage; however there is no outrage for Black History Month. Norton also takes issue with the NAACP, because it is "only concerned with the advancement of colored people." If there was such an organization for whites, Norton explains it would be likened to the KKK and it is this double standard that he cannot stand. He claims he is not a racist, he simply does not understand why black people have a right to certain programs and aid due to their race. Norton finishes his article saying that we should not look at color, and by looking at race, we are promoting racist ideals.</text>

Snead was suspended from classroom teaching in November 1988 due to his "sexist and racial remarks in the classroom." His lawsuit against the University was on the basis that being suspended from teaching was a violation of his tenured rights. In response, the University demanded that Snead assure the University that he would not make any more sexual or racist remarks, and he refused. Snead explained how "it's mainly blacks, women and certain religious groups that have this fervor to make you say things just the way they want you to say them." The dispute was eventually settled the day of the trial, and the settlement was kept sealed by order of the court. Snead remained as a paid member of the faculty but was not permitted to teach.</text>

<text>In this <em>University of Richmond Collegian</em> editorial, written in response to “actor-entertainer” Bill Cosby donating $20 million to Spelman College, white student Rick Mayes attempts to argue that if all-white institutions and organizations are racist, then so are all-Black institutions. He further claims that he has experienced racism at the E. Bruce Heilman Dining Center from several of the Black employees, who see him as a stereotypical white student at the University of Richmond. His friend Harvey Whitney, a Black student, claims that Black organizations are a way to preserve identity. Although generally in agreement, Mayes still argues that all-Black colleges and organizations indirectly promote racism.</text>

Mba-Jonas responds by outlining the history of racism and discrimination specifically at the University of Richmond, which he believes to be “…a college for blond hair and blue eyes.” He further points out the systemic racial inequities apparent at the University, from the all-white police force to the majority white dining hall management over a mostly black staff. He describes an encounter with the campus police after a white female student had reported Mba-Jonas just for walking by her dormitory, an experience that Mba-Jonas says is unique to his status as a black man on campus.</text>
