Mrs. F. M. Mitchell fired two shots at him, however he managed to escape. It had been known that some of the young woman's possessions had gone missing, so when the man knocked at several students doors, they became suspicious and made the matron aware.</text>

<text>In this article, the author discussed how the main campus of the University was “truly integrated” for the first time. In the fall of 1968, five full-time black students were admitted to the main campus. The author claimed that there had been reports that the Department of Health, Education, and Welfare (HEW) was “applying pressure” to the University to integrate its faculty. The author also claimed that there had been talks of the University doing a faculty exchange program with a Historically Black University called Virginia Union University, as Virginia Union was doing a similar program with Randolph-Macon College. Virginia Union expressed much willingness to participate in this program with the University of Richmond. <em>The Collegian</em> urged more complete integration, as the white students had only had limited contact with black people throughout their lives. The author felt that they deserved to get a chance to experience the “educated Negro,” rather than the negative depiction of black people they saw through the media in cities such as Chicago, Detroit, Watts, etc. The author claimed that the University could not claim to be a true liberal arts institution without providing its students the opportunity to be exposed to all “races, creeds, colors, and social backgrounds” through the process of full integration.</text>

<text>This article talks about pressure from the federal government to integrate the University of Richmond by getting more black students, faculty, and staff. The university spokesman said that the President, Dean of Education, and the Provost were not available to make any comment or take any action on the matter. The federal government threatened to cut federal funding to the university if they failed to integrate. Federal funding contributed one million dollars to build a dormitory on campus during the one year the university signed up for federal funding. Prior to that year, the board of trustees blocked the university from applying for federal funding. The federal proposal involves a part time exchange program for "negro" students and faculty from the Virginia Union University. A similar exchange of faculty was examined between Virginia Union and the all-white Methodist Randolph Macon College. No comment was received from Virginia Union officials on the issue. Student teachers were going to be pushed into the Richmond public school system. Placements into the school will be done after considering the wishes of the student, faculty, and the university. A current federal study showed that there were only 2 black students out of 2587 students.</text>

<text>This article talks about how the President of Virginia Union University (VUU), Thomas H. Henderson, was on board with the idea of having a faculty exchange with the University of Richmond. President of the University of Richmond, George Modlin, had no comment on the possible exchange or a recent federal notification ordering the university to integrate in order to receive further federal funding. Both the universities are Baptist affiliated. VUU, a historically black university (HBCU), had dozens of white students and faculty while UR, a predominantly white and segregated school, had only two black students. VUU was currently carrying out a similar exchange program with the the all-white Methodist Randolph Macon College which only had one or two black students and no black faculty. The government suggested that UR should also send some of its student teachers to practice in black schools in the Richmond Public School system. This talk of desegregation resurfaced the hesistance shown by University official during accepting federal funding. The federal government threatened to pull out the federal funding to the school if UR failed to integrate. UR only recently received its federal funding of one million for dormitory construction after long discussion and consultation with the major Baptist bodies associated with the university.</text>

Grigg and Dean Gehring attended to discuss potential cooperative programs between University of Richmond, Randolph Macon College, Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU), and Virginia Union University. Deans and members from such institutions were a part of the meeting, as well as librarians and computer center directors who were in separate meetings. The program would be funded under Title III of the Higher Education Act and such provisions were outlined in eight (8) bullets. The summary included a deadline for the school presidents and executive committees to react to the cooperative program, a deadline for the schools to submit their teaching fellow requests, a cooperative professor of Russian and Geography is requested, a grant is proposed to begin a listing of all serial holdings in the libraries of the institutions within the program, expand the computer offerings to students through teaching fellowships, and a grant is to be requested to investigate the issues of scheduling and assignments associated with the cooperative program.</text>

<text>This is an August 2, 1968 memorandum from Austin E. Grigg, Dean of Richmond College. The memo is addressed to President George Modlin and CC’s Provost Smart. Grigg writes this memo after the joint meeting at University Center designed to facilitate a new cooperative program between Randolph Macon, Virginia Union, Virginia Commonwealth University, and the University of Richmond. This proposal was designed to work within <a href="https://www.gao.gov/products/127541" target="_blank">Title III of the Higher Education Act of 1965</a>. Dean Grigg discusses the necessary inclusion of the university Librarians prior to any cooperative library projects conception. The benefits of such cooperation could be significant, particularly through the sharing of certain high tech, and high cost, materials like an IBM computer for example. Grigg asserts that this could be a very good program for the University of Richmond to be a part of, and reminds President Modlin of the October 1st deadline all schools were requested to decide by.</text>

Over the course of the one hour interview, Slaughter discussed his experience as the first black professor in the business school and one of the few black professors university-wide, including his educational background at Historically Black Colleges and Universities prior to coming to Richmond, the hiring and tenure processes, and his service-focused academic career. Slaughter also reflected on institutional changes he would like to see in order to reduce discrimination and promote diversity in faculty.<br /><br /><img src="https://memory.richmond.edu/files/misc/SlaughterRaymond_1980.jpg" alt="" />
<p>Raymond Slaughter was born in 1945 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He graduated from Kentucky State University in 1967, and attended Howard University Law School and obtained his law degree in 1970. In 1971, he received his MBA in Business Administration from the University of Pennsylvania. He worked for public accounting firm Ernst &amp; Ernst in Detroit Michigan, and then began teaching at Bucknell University. In 1977, he moved to Richmond and began teaching in the accounting department of the Robins School of Business, where he taught for 41 years before his retirement in 2018.</p></text>
