While Boatwright had been away in Florida with his wife, Dean Keller left a disapproving note for president Boatwright, and Dr. Douglas S. Freeman, having received notice of the event from Mr. William Rodenheiser, had written the President to inform him of the matter. His letter is dated 10 days after the publication of the petition. Douglas suggests that Boatwright take the matter to the Executive Committee (which he later does) and suggests that Boatwright is in a "damned if you do, damned if you don't" sort of situation. While in his reply, Boatwright later claimed that it would be an easy matter to resolve, his dismissive response given to the newspaper was said to be approved by the Board of Trustees, but it sent a message of disapproval while the Board of Trustees' previous message had been apologetic.
