Main St. Gallery that includes art by artists Judy McLeod, Jude Schlotzhauer, and Amy Archinal. Each artist has a distinct style and focuses on issues such as, “women’s liberation from traditional stereotypes,”, “anxiety and bliss of the human drama,”, and the “energy of life.” Another exhibit at 1717 E. Franklin Street displays art by artist Lester Blackiston. His poems are, “inverted paintings,” that are associated with the Beat Generation of the 1950s and early 1960s. These exhibits were on display until February 27th.</text>

Their talk show tackles difficult discussions such as homosexuality and sex, while also addressing activities around campus and the Richmond community. There is no structure to the show as Young and Flora go with the flow. Listeners tune in from The University of Richmond campus all the way to the Virginia Commonwealth University. Through vigorous advertising on behalf of Young and Flora, College Talk is a popular radio show which draws-in its listeners through chances to win prizes, in addition to the controversial topics that are discussed. During a comical part of the interview with the two co-hosts, Young and Flora both agreed that they enjoyed the female callers compared to the male callers because, “they offer more varied and individual responses than most of the men.” College Talk is an expanding passion of both Young and Flora.</text>

Modlin, the President of the University of Richmond. Hamilton wrote to Modlin regarding the issue of communism in the United States, especially in higher education; recently, three faculty members at the University of Washington were dismissed because two admitted that they were members of the Communist party and one refused to state whether he was a member. Hamilton wanted to write a news story to "enlighten readers on freedom of education in Virginia" and asked Modlin to provide a statement regarding the loyalty of university faculty members, political activities of faculty members and students, dismissal of faculty members due to their political activities, and books not used in classes due to "undesirable political, social or economic viewpoints."</text>

<text>In this 1951 letter from Edmond H. Brill, Jr. to Dr. George M. Modlin, Brill attaches a script for Modlin to read on Radio Station WRNL. At this time, Modlin served as the President of the Richmond Chamber of Commerce; the speech explains that the Chamber is concerned about the traffic problems in Richmond. They believe that constructing a freeway would solve this problem and the speech outlines three reasons why the Chamber supports the freeway: it will be effective, convenient, and safe for people; it has been endorsed by every traffic authority; and it will be "soundly financed." Towards the end of the speech, Brill writes, "It is most unfortunate that a Freeway cannot be located and constructed anywhere without affecting the interests of some individuals, business firms, and institutions." However, it does not go into detail about who these people are and the negative impact the freeway may have on these groups. <a href="http://dig.library.vcu.edu/cdm/landingpage/collection/jwh" target="_blank">The Richmond-Petersburg Turnpike (now part of I-95) would eventually be run through Jackson Ward, a historic black neighborhood in Richmond, which was also the center of economic vitality for black Richmonders. The freeway, combined with white-flight, caused a decline for the neighborhood and its residents.</a></text>

Conquest wrote to Modlin on March 11, 1965, to inform him of Richmond Forward&rsquo;s resolution which was unanimously passed on March 10, 1965. Richmond Forward was interested in "the best possible government for Richmond and in determining the best possible method of solving our urban problems" and felt it necessary to conduct non-partisan research on Richmond&rsquo;s "urban problems." In addition, they requested the University of Richmond&rsquo;s help to "set up the appropriate department to undertake non-partisan research into the problems facing the City of Richmond and the two adjacent counties, Henrico and Chesterfield." It is unclear what Richmond Forward means by "urban problems," but is likely tied to nationwide efforts towards urban renewal. Urban renewal often destroyed historical landmarks and neighborhoods, many of them populated by marginalized communities.</text>

<text>This letter was sent on July 8, 1949, by George M. Modlin, the President of the University of Richmond, to Charles H. Hamilton, the City Editor of the <em>Richmond News Leader</em>. This letter was sent in response to Hamilton’s letter requesting a statement regarding political activities at the university in light of the concern surrounding communism in the United States. Modlin’s response was sent past the June 28 deadline Hamilton gave him. Modlin wrote that faculty members were not required to give a "loyalty statement" and the university does not ask about the faculty or prospective faculty’s political beliefs. The university had not dismissed any faculty members based on political affiliation, but "an avowed member of the Communist party would not be permitted on the faculty as he would not be free to seek and teach the truth." In addition, textbooks were chosen by professors and none had been rejected based on "undesirable political or economic material." The students were also encouraged to participate in political activities "in preparation for active citizenship."</text>

Sanger, the President of the Medical College of Virginia. According to Modlin, this letter was in response to a letter sent by Willcott on January 17. Modlin wrote that he will not agree to serve as vice chairman of the Central Committee for Educational Television until there are clear expectations on what the three of them would work on together. He wanted to discuss this with representatives from Richmond television stations to "be more certain of their attitudes toward this new educational development." Modlin claimed that if "something constructive may be accomplished by our working together," then he would take the position. However, the details of the new educational development is unstated.</text>
